Informational Text: Treasures in the Deep
Lexile: ~530L
Have you ever visited a hidden cave site? A cave scientist puts on a hard cap with a bright lamp. To stay dry in dripping tunnels, they wear a waterproof cape over their shoulders. Workers step onto a mine cart to take a fast ride down into the dark. They use steel pickaxes to rid the rocky walls of loose mud.
Long ago, thieves would sneak underground to rob royal mines of their treasures. An emperor would wear a velvet robe decorated with every sparkling gem found in the ground. Today, researchers enter through an iron gate that keeps the cavern safe. Near the rocky entrance, a wild bear cub might rest quietly in the cool shade. Behind a plain gray wall, explorers discover a giant crystal room!
Heat and mineral water make huge crystals grow over time during Earth's rock cycle. Some minerals grow into the clean shape of a cube. Explorers sit on wooden stools to inspect each crystal, then place it inside a wire cage so it will not break on the journey up to sunlight.
