Directions: Read the historical narrative set in 1848 Lowell, Massachusetts. Then answer questions 1 through 5 on page 2.
[1] At sunrise, the brick monoliths of the Boott Cotton Mills groaned awake along the Merrimack River. Inside the third-floor weaving room, seventy power looms shuddered into motion all at once, transforming the humid hall into an iron leviathan swallowing the daylight. Thirteen-year-old Cora stood alert at her station, her fingers dusted with floating white lint that drifted through the shafts of dust-mote sunlight. For twelve hours each day, her world was measured by the hypnotic, deafening thwack of wooden shuttles flying across rows of taut cotton warp threads.
[2] To the mill overseers pacing the floorboards with brass stopwatches, the room produced merely a profitable symphony of cloth. But to Cora, the relentless cacophony possessed an intricate, secret language. She had learned to distinguish the crisp, rhythmic chirp of a well-oiled harness from the raspy, dry screech of an overstrained gear. While her hands rapidly mended snapped threads, her thoughts wandered far beyond the grease-stained floor to the botany books she secretly devoured by candlelight in her boardinghouse attic room.
[3] "Keep those bobbins humming, Cora," shouted Mrs. Higgins, her sharp voice barely piercing the mechanical din. "The company agent inspects the calico bolts at midday, and we cannot afford a single flaw." Cora nodded with practiced obedience, smoothing her canvas apron, though her eyes stole a momentary glance through the high transom window—where the Merrimack surged freely toward the ocean.
[4] Suddenly, an erratic, hollow screech rasped from loom number forty-two, just across the narrow aisle. While neighboring weavers remained bent over their shuttles, Cora froze. She recognized the deadly pitch instantly: a drive pulley was binding against its central leather belt, generating intense friction against the dry birch frame. A thin wisp of acrid smoke began curling toward the lint-laden rafters—a catastrophic fire waiting to erupt.
[5] Without waiting for an overseer's command, Cora sprang forward. Slipping past flying gears and grease spray, she threw her entire weight onto the iron emergency release treadle. With a sharp groan of counterweights, the spinning flywheel disengaged moments before the overheated belt could burst into flames. The machine shuddered to an abrupt stop, casting an eerie, ringing silence across her section.
[6] When the overseer hurried toward the quieted station, his face pale with shock, Cora stood composed, pointing directly to the charred spindle axle. Her quick perception had saved not merely bolts of cloth, but countless lives. Amidst the relentless machinery of the Industrial Revolution, Cora proved that human intellect and keen observation remained the mill's most vital force.
