“The Punctuation Sandwich”
Key Punctuation
Commas , Dashes — Parentheses ( )
1
Explicit Modeling: The Sandwich Rule (3 mins)
I Do
Teacher Script: “Yesterday we hunted for words like means . Today, authors use punctuation marks as bookends around definitions. Imagine a sandwich: the two commas (or dashes, or parentheses) are the slices of bread, and the author hides the definition right inside as the filling!”
“The canopy, the high leafy roof of the forest, blocks sunlight.”
2
Guided Practice: Finger Framing (5 mins)
We Do
Have the student place two index fingers physically on the two punctuation marks in the sentence.
Guiding Prompt: “Put your fingers on both commas. Read only what is trapped between them. Does that phrase explain the hard word right in front of it?”
Substitution Test: “Replace the hard word with the words between the commas. Does the sentence still make sense?”
!
Diagnostic Error Correction
Error: Student reads past the closing comma or dash without stopping to identify the appositive restatement.
Corrective Feedback: “Pause! Notice the second comma. Stop and treat the words between those commas like a definition bubble.”
Error: Student confuses a list of items with an appositive definition.
Corrective Feedback: “Ask yourself: is this naming other things, or is this renaming the exact same thing?”
3
Independent Application & Transition (7 mins)
You Do
Transition the student to the Punctuation Patrol Worksheet . Student underlines punctuation pairs and writes the definition in the work area. Target: 100% accuracy on identifying the appositive frame before advancing to Day 3.
