Dough Stamp Studio: Long Vowel Mastery
Focus: Orthographic mapping of CVCe and long vowel teams using tactile playdough modeling and letter stamping.
Learning Objective
Students will segment long vowel words into phonemes, mold dough snakes to form letter shapes, stamp target words in sequence, and decode the word with 80%+ accuracy.
Target Standards
CCSS RF.K.3.b, RF.1.3.c
(Long vowels, silent e & vowel digraphs)
Materials & Prep Checklist
Playdough tubs (1 per pair)
Lowercase letter stamp sets
Laminated Dough Mats
Word-Picture Cards & dry-erase
STEP 1: EXPLICIT MODELING ("I DO") 10 Minutes
Anchor Demonstration: Display the word CAP. Have students read it. Then add e to create CAPE. Explain: "Silent Magic 'e' is a quiet hero. It taps the vowel on the shoulder and whispers: 'Say your name!'"
1. Roll the Dough: Model rolling a playdough snake between flat palms. Form each letter inside the hollow mat outlines (c - a - k - e).
2. Stamp the Letters: Flatten a dough pancake or ink pad. Press stamps firmly in left-to-right sequence while saying each letter name.
3. Slide & Blend: Run your finger under the word to sweep and read the blended word aloud: "/k/ ... /ā/ ... /k/ → cake!"
STEP 2: GUIDED PARTNER PRACTICE ("WE DO") 10 Minutes
Distribute the KITE mat to student pairs (Partner A: Dough Sculptor, Partner B: Stamp Master).
Role A • Sculptor Rolls dough balls for the sound dots. Says: "/k/ /ī/ /t/ — 3 sounds!" Rolls letters k-i-t-e.
Role B • Stamper Finds lowercase stamps k, i, t, e. Stamps boxes in order and traces with dry-erase marker.

STEP 3: INDEPENDENT ROTATIONS ("YOU DO") 15 Minutes
Students work in triads or independently with the Universal Build Any Word Mat and shuffled Word-Picture Cards:
1. DRAW & TAP
Flip a picture card. Roll tiny dough balls onto sound dots while vocalizing sounds.
Focus: Phonemic isolation
2. STAMP THE BOXES
Select stamps for each letter. Press into playdough strip or paper boxes.
