The Fennec Fox: Secret Survivor of the Dunes
Lexile ~620L • 185 words
¶ 1 The Sahara Desert in northern Africa is one of the hottest places on Earth. Summer temperatures rise above 110 degrees, yet one tiny mammal thrives here: the fennec fox. Weighing only two to three pounds, it is the smallest fox species in the world, but it has clever adaptations to survive the scorching heat.
¶ 2 The fox’s most famous feature is its giant ears, which can grow up to six inches long. These oversized ears act like natural air conditioners. Hot blood rushes through tiny veins in the ears, releasing heat into the cooler evening air. At the same time, its sensitive ears can hear tasty beetles and lizards burrowing deep underneath the sand dunes.
¶ 3 Walking across desert sand is dangerous because the ground can blister bare skin. The fennec fox has thick, furry pads on the bottoms of its paws. This fur acts like protective snowshoes, keeping the fox from slipping, sinking into loose dunes, or burning its sensitive feet.
¶ 4 Finding water in the desert is nearly impossible, but fennec foxes rarely need to drink from waterholes. Instead, their bodies absorb all the moisture they need from eating juicy desert plants, leaves, lizards, and eggs. They sleep in deep, cool underground dens during the boiling day and hunt under the starry night sky.
