The "So What?" Step

Real STAAR SCR Comparison: Explaining Author's Purpose Prompt: How does the narrator view his childhood home?
Score 1: The Quote-Parrot Trap Flawed 'E'
The narrator sees his home as sad. He writes, "the walls were hollow ribs of grey." This quote shows he is sad because the house is grey and broke down.
Why it scores 1: Merely repeats what the quote literally says; gives no insight into author's purpose or craft.
Score 2: Analytical & Purpose-Driven STAAR Standard
The narrator views his home as a lifeless relic. He recalls that "the walls were hollow ribs of grey." By comparing the structure to a skeletal ribcage, the author underscores how emotional warmth has decayed, proving the memory brings him grief rather than comfort.
Why it scores 2: Analyzes metaphor ("ribs"), unpacks purpose (decay of warmth), and connects back to claim.
