1. The Atomic Foundation: Why Things Flow

Matter exists in different states based on the balance between Kinetic Energy and Attractive Forces. In a solid, attractive forces are so strong that atoms are locked in a rigid lattice. They vibrate but cannot move past one another.

In fluids (liquids and gases), atoms have enough kinetic energy to slide past or fly away from each other. This lack of a rigid structure allows fluids to "flow" and take the shape of their container.

"A fluid is defined by its ability to yield easily to external pressure and flow into available space."

2. Characterizing Fluids: Density

Density (\(\rho\)) is a bulk property describing how much mass is concentrated in a specific volume. It is an intrinsic characteristic—the density of water is the same whether you have a cup or a lake.

The Density Ratio

\[ \rho = \frac{m}{V} \]

\(\rho\) = Density m = Mass V = Volume

3. The Ideal Fluid Model

To simplify complex physics, we use the Ideal Fluid model, which assumes:

Incompressible

The density (\(\rho\)) remains perfectly constant regardless of external pressure. This is a standard assumption for liquids.

Non-Viscous

The fluid has zero internal friction. It flows perfectly smoothly without losing kinetic energy to heat.

4. Defining Pressure: Force Concentration

Pressure describes how a force is distributed across a surface. While force is a push, pressure is the intensity of that push.

Area (\(A\))

\[ P = \frac{F_{\perp}}{A} \]

Unit: Pascal (Pa)
\(1\text{ Pa} = 1\text{ Newton / meter}^2\)

Snowshoe Analogy

Wearing snowshoes increases Area (A), which decreases Pressure (P), keeping you from sinking into the snow.

Pressure is a Scalar

Unlike force, pressure has no direction. At any point in a static fluid, it acts equally in all directions.

5. The Microscopic Engine: Particle Impacts

At the molecular level, pressure is the collective momentum change of billions of particles striking a surface. Every time a molecule bounces off a wall, it exerts a tiny impulse.

While one collision is negligible, the cumulative force of billions of particles creates the smooth macroscopic pressure we measure with a gauge.

6. Understanding Pressure Scales

Measurements can be relative or absolute. A tire gauge reads "0 psi" when a tire is flat, but the tire is still filled with air at atmospheric pressure (\(P_{atm}\)).

Absolute Pressure: Total pressure from a perfect vacuum. Always positive.

Gauge Pressure: Measured relative to atmosphere. Zero means internal = external.

Example: The Scuba Diver

A diver's gauge might show 100 kPa of water pressure. To find the total pressure crushing the diver, you must add the 101.3 kPa of atmospheric pressure pressing down on the water's surface!

7. Pressure in a Vertical Column

As you descend, pressure increases linearly because you are supporting the weight of the fluid overhead.

The Derivation

1. Force (Weight) = \(m \cdot g\)

2. Mass = \(\rho \cdot V\)

3. Volume = \(A \cdot h\)

4. Pressure = \(F / A\)

Result: \(P = \rho gh\)

Area (A) cancels out, meaning pressure depends only on depth, density, and gravity.

Hydrostatic Formula

\[ P_{gauge} = \rho gh \]

Absolute at Depth:

\[ P = P_{atm} + \rho gh \]

5. Calculate the pressure (in Pascals) exerted by a 800 N person standing on one foot with an area of \(0.02\text{ m}^2\).

6. A diver is at 30m in fresh water (\(\rho = 1000\text{ kg/m}^3\)). Calculate the absolute pressure in kPa. (\(P_{atm} = 101.3\text{ kPa}\), \(g=9.8\text{ m/s}^2\)).

7. Summarize the "Substitute Fluid" theory: Why can we replace an object with fluid to find the buoyant force? (Think about the pressure fields).
