Vowel Wranglers
Target Phonics: R-Controlled Vowels (ar, er, ir, or) & Diphthongs (oy, ou)
Time
30 MIN
Required Materials
- Visual Flashcards (ar, er, ir, or, oy, ou)
- Sound Mapping Sheet (one per student)
- Dry-erase markers / pencils & chips for sound mapping
Daily Objective
Students will accurately isolate, blend, map, and spell words containing R-controlled vowels and diphthongs to build automaticity.
1
Phonemic Awareness: Sound Isolation & Blending
5 Min
Teacher says the sounds, students listen carefully without writing, then respond in unison.
Part A: Sound Isolation
Teacher: "Listen: smart. What vowel sound is in smart?" (Response: "/ar/"). "Now listen: spoil. What sound is in the middle?" (Response: "/oy/").
• shark → /ar/ | stern → /er/
• joint → /oy/ | shout → /ou/
Part B: Sound Blending
Teacher: "Lasso these individual sounds together to ride the word!"
• /f/ - /or/ - /k/ → fork
• /t/ - /oy/ → toy
• /c/ - /l/ - /ou/ - /d/ → cloud
• /t/ - /er/ - /m/ → term
2
Visual & Auditory Drill (Card Review)
8 Min
Visual Drill (Reveal Cards)
Hold up each card (ar, er, ir, or, oy, ou).
Teacher: "Spelling?" → "ar"
Teacher: "Sound?" → "/ar/ as in car"
Repeat with all spelling cards in your pack.
Auditory Drill (Write Sound)
Teacher dictates. Students write spellings in dry-erase space.
Teacher: "Your sound is /oy/. Write spellings." → "oy, oi".
Teacher: "Your sound is /er/. Write spellings." → "er, ir, ur".
3
Blending Drill (Visual Board Practice)
7 Min
Display slides. Tap each letter while students sound it out, then swipe to blend.
Teacher: "Look at the word on the board. When I tap the letters, say each sound. When I swipe, read the whole word. Let's corral these sounds!"

Introducing New Concepts & Key Words
5 Min
The /ar/ Sound
Mouth: Jaw drops low, tongue is pulled back, sound is voiced.
Keyword: Car (/ar/)
The /oy/ Sound
Mouth: Lips glide from a rounded circle to a flat smiling posture.
Keyword: Toy (/oy/)
The /ou/ Sound
Mouth: Mouth starts wide open, then rapidly rounds down.
Keyword: Cloud (/ou/)
Facilitator Tip: Point out how the r-controlled vowels work as a unit. The 'r' bosses the vowel. The diphthongs require active mouth movement—students can place fingers near cheeks to feel their jaw slide!
5
Orthographic Mapping Sequence
10 Min
Guide students using the "Vowel Wranglers Mapping Sheet". Have them prepare chip markers and pencils.
Step-by-Step Mapping Script:
1. Say & Repeat: "Say smart. Now let's tap the sound elements: /s/ - /m/ - /ar/ - /t/."
2. Place Chips: "Slide a chip into a box on your sheet for each sound. How many sounds? (4 sounds)."
3. Map Letters: "Write the letters in each box. Note: ar goes together in one sound box!"
4. Write Word: "Write the whole word on the lines next to it. Sweep your hand across the lines."
6
Dictation Assessment & Sentences
5 Min
Part A: Words for Student Sheet
Dictate these words to students to write in the Dictation block of their mapping sheet:
- bark (/b/-/ar/-/k/)
- soil (/s/-/oi/-/l/)
- loud (/l/-/ou/-/d/)
- term (/t/-/er/-/m/)
Part B: Sentences for Dictation
Read the entire sentence. Have students repeat it twice, then write:
Sentence 1: "The brown owl let out a loud sound."
Sentence 2: "We found a coin in the dark park."
