STEP 3 Direct Instruction: Onset Blend Substitution (8 Mins)
Teach students how to swap multi-letter onsets (e.g. digraph-to-digraph, or single-consonant to blend).
🗣️ SUBSTITUTION SCRIPT:
Say: "Now let's do a heavy parts swap. I am going to change a single letter onset to a blend. Say sip. Change /s/ to the blend /cl/. What is our new word?" (Students say: clip).
Say: "Excellent! Let's swap digraphs. Say ship. Take away /sh/, throw it in the scrap pile. Pick up the team sound /ch/. Install /ch/ at the start of /ip/. What word is it?" (Students say: chip).
Say: "Let's perform these swaps on our Student Mats. Use the dual-pin slots on your green gear to hold the blend tiles!"

CVCE Sparkplug Troubleshooting (Common Errors)
Error: Student reverts to the short vowel sound during deletion/substitution (e.g., changing lake to /m/ results in mack instead of make).
