Expedition Overview
Students join character Safari Sam on an expedition into the silent 'e' jungle. Students will learn how the addition of the "silent e" at the end of CVC (Consonant-Vowel-Consonant) words triggers a magical transformation, turning short 'a' and 'i' vowels into long, strong vowel sounds that say their own names.

• Review Short Vowels: Display CVC cards like cap and pin. Have the class sound them out together (/c/-/a/-/p/).
• Hook: Introduce Safari Sam ! "Sam is on an adventure in the Phonics Jungle. He found a mysterious letter hiding at the end of words. This letter doesn't make a sound, but it has magical powers! It is the Silent E!"

Direct Instruction: Safari Sam's Magic Rule (12 Mins)
• Present the Anchor Chart: Introduce the Safari Sam Anchor Chart . Point to Safari Sam using his "magic binoculars" (representing the silent 'e') to look back at the short vowel and make it long.
• Model the Rule: Put cap on the board. Add a magnetic/paper 'e' to the end. "Watch closely explorers! When Safari Sam places his silent 'e' at the end, it points its binoculars back at the 'a'. Now, 'a' doesn't say /a/ anymore. It says its own name: /A/! The word is now cape!"
• Explicit Modeling (i_e): Repeat the visual process with pin turning into pine. Explain that the 'e' remains completely quiet—"shh!"—so it has more power to give to the first vowel.

Ensure you emphasize that the silent 'e' has no voice of its own . Have kids physically put their finger to their lips and whisper "shh" whenever they see the silent 'e' highlight to reinforce the silent visual cue.
