The Unseen Threat
The mind fears what it cannot see. Never show the "monster" immediately. Focus on shadows and brief sensory indicators.
Slowing Pacing
Elongate moments of tension. Describe the slow, shallow breath, the freezing temperature, and the micro-movements of waiting.
Sensory Shift
Strip away sight entirely. Make your characters rely on hearing, touch (cold sweat, heavy damp air), and smell (pine rot, smoke).

I pull my thermal sleeping bag tighter around my chin, trying to regulate my breath. In. Out.
Then, a different sound. Not a pop, but a rhythmic schh-schh-schh —the heavy scraping of something bulky dragging itself through the dry pine needles. My amygdala fires, releasing a torrent of adrenaline. Instantly, my heart hammers against my ribs, so violently I’m certain whatever is moving outside can hear it. My hearing sharpens, filtering out the distant whistle of the cold wind to focus entirely on that rhythmic dragging. It stops. Just three feet from my tent flap. I freeze, holding my breath, waiting.
