Common Structural Errors
1. Swapping Evidence and Explain (E vs X):
Students often mistake the analytical "why/how" sentence (Beam 6 / Beam 1) for concrete data. Remind them that Evidence almost always holds hard research, percentages, or measurements.
2. Mixing Up Topic and Tie-up (T1 vs T2):
Both sentences sound like broad claims. Guide the student to look for transition terms like "Ultimately" or "Therefore" which signal conclusion/tie-up.
3. Cross-Contaminating Paragraph Themes:
Students might separate by structure rather than topic. Have them group all 4 gaming beams and all 4 forestry beams first before placing them in the T-E-X-T rows.
Targeted Prompting Scripts
If they struggle with Evidence (E):
"Look at these sentences. Which one reads like an objective fact or contains statistics from a study? What's the number or percentage that proves our point?"
If they struggle with Explain (X):
"Now that we have the proof, how does that scientific data actually make our mind or body work? Which sentence makes the connection for the reader?"
If they struggle with Tie-Up (T2):
"If you were speaking to an audience, how would you sign off? Which sentence acts like a closing bow to wrap everything up neatly?"
