This center is built to help early readers decode and map CVC to CVCe sound transitions. Adding the silent, "bossy" e at the end of a word signals that the preceding vowel changes from its short, lax sound to its long, tense sound (it "says its name"). Giving students a physical, somatic action (placing a letter or clipping a card) cements this structural spelling rule.
Center Preparation
- • Mats: Laminate the double-sided transition page. Provide a physical yellow magnetic letter "e" or a yellow plastic token.
- • Clip Cards: Cut Page 2 and 3 into 8 individual cards. Provide clothespins. Tip: Write a small 'e' on the clamping end of the clothespin.
⚠️ Place materials in a shallow wicker basket to complete the wizard aesthetic.
Verbal Modeling Script
"Wizards, hold up your short word. This says /p/ - /i/ - /n/, pin. A pin is a sharp little needle. Now, wave your Magic Wand... and land your Magic E right in the slot! Look! The magic travels backwards. It taps the vowel /i/ on the shoulder and says, 'Say your name!' The vowel changes from /ih/ to /eye/. Let's read the mutated word: /p/ - /eye/ - /n/, pine!"
