Detective Strategy
Setting and Character Clues
WHO vs WHAT
Look for characters and their actions.
"Detective Maya grabbed her glowing flashlight."
Who: Detective Maya
What: Grabbed her glowing flashlight
WHERE vs WHEN
Look for the story setting and timing.
"At midnight, she crept into the old library."
When: At midnight
Where: The old library
Tip: Setting combines both WHERE (place) and WHEN (time)!
Advanced Investigation
Cracking WHY and HOW
WHY = The Reason
Answers the question behind character motives. Often uses signal words like because, so that, in order to, since.
"She checked behind the bookshelf because she heard a faint scratching sound."
Reason: To investigate the scratching sound
HOW = The Process
Answers how something happened or how someone felt. Often uses signal words like by, carefully, slowly, with, using.
"She unlocked the tiny secret door by turning the antique brass key three times."
Method: Turning the key three times
