Level 3 • Mastered 80-100%
Accurately drops question word, recycles complete stem, provides accurate answer detail, capitalizes and punctuates correctly.
Level 2 • Approaching 60-79%
Recycles part of the stem or drops the verb; writes complete thought but retains awkward phrasing (e.g., retains "does"). Minor punctuation slips.
Level 1 • Emergent <60%
Provides isolated fragments, single-word answers, or begins answer with "Because" without echoing the question subject and verb.

The Mystery Answer Hook (4 Minutes)
Teacher: [Walk into the circle looking excited. Say loudly without context:] "Blue cheese! ... What do you think, class?"
Students: [Look confused] "What? What are you talking about?"
Teacher: "You don't understand me? But I answered! You see, in my head, I asked: 'What is the stinkiest cheese in the world?' But because I only said two words, none of you knew what I meant! When we speak or write, just giving the answer leaves people in the dark."
Teacher: "Today, we become members of the Echo Squad. Our mission: Turn the question around so our answers stand tall as complete, powerful sentences!"
