The "Blank Paper" Legibility Test
Per official UIL rules (Page 3), if letter legibility is questioned, judges place a blank sheet of paper on either side of the letter. If it cannot be identified on its own, it is marked wrong!
The 4 Mandatory Capitals
On the 3-4 list: English (#148), European (#153), Irish (#272), and October (#383) must begin with a capital letter. Writing them in lowercase is an automatic 0.
Accepted Alternate Spellings
Either variant is 100% correct: nosy, nosey (#369); queasy, queazy (#446); vapor, vapour (#566); visor, vizor (#576). Teach contestants their preferred variant for consistency.
Explanatory Homophone Definitions
Callers read definitions to identify words: hare (rabbit), jay (bird), ceiling (upper part of a room), cater (provide food), wasp (insect), wry (ironic), sane (mentally sound).
Official Tiebreaker Scoring Protocol (Page 4, Section 1470)
15 Words Immediately Follow Core Test
All contestants must take the 15 tiebreaker words or face disqualification. Tiebreaker papers remain unsealed and un-scored unless a tie exists for individual or team medals. Approx. 20% of tiebreaker words come from sources outside the list (Merriam-Webster Intermediate Dictionary).
The Word Hospital: Guaranteed Zero-Recidivism Protocol
1. Isolate Circle the exact faulty letter.
2. Rule Anchor Write the spelling rule or mnemonic.
3. Triple Ink Write cleanly 3 times without error.
4. Tuesday Re-Test Re-test previous week's hospital words.
