Sound Sleuths Teacher Guide
Educator Guide Grades 1–2 • Phonics & Phonemic Awareness
Sound Sleuths: Blends vs. Digraphs
Estimated Time: 20–25 Min
Target: Orthographic Mapping
B
Consonant Blends
2 Letters = 2 Distinct Sounds
Letters blend smoothly together, but each letter keeps its own sound. You can hear and segment both phonemes.
f-l-a-g → /f/ + /l/ Kinesthetic: 2 finger taps
D
Consonant Digraphs
2 Letters = 1 Brand-New Sound
Two consonants team up to make one single new phoneme. The original individual sounds disappear.
s-h-i-p → /sh/ (1 sound) Kinesthetic: 1 finger press
Mini-Lesson Instructional Sequence
1. Warm-Up (3 min)
Sound Showdown
Say minimal pairs aloud: slip vs. ship, clap vs. chap. Have students count sounds on fingers.
2. Teach (5 min)
Explicit Modeling
Show that st in stop has 2 sounds (/s/-/t/), while sh in shop is a brand-new single sound (/sh/).
3. Guided (7 min)
Sound Button Tapping
Draw sound buttons on board: 2 dots under blends (● ●), 1 bar/chip under digraphs (━). Tap together.
4. Practice (10 min)
Student Mission
Distribute worksheet for independent word reading, sorting evidence, and hunting sounds in sentences.
Curated Master Word Bank (Controlled & Decodable)
4 categories for instruction and differentiated practice

- • frog (/f/-/r/)
- • drum (/d/-/r/)

- • thin (/th/)
- • whale (/wh/)
- • moth (/th/)
- • duck (/k/)
Double Sleuth Blend + Digraph

- • blush (bl / sh)
- • trash (tr / sh)
Common Misconceptions & Teacher Prompts
1. Treating Blends as 1 Sound:
Students often map st- as one phoneme. Prompt: "Stretch it out like bubble gum: /s/.../t/. Did your mouth move twice? Yes! Two sounds!"
2. Trying to Separate Digraphs:
Students might try to say /s/ then /h/ for sh. Prompt: "Do you hear a quiet whispering 's' and then a panting 'h'? No, they locked together to say /sh/!"

Consonant Blend Clue
2 letters = 2 sounds! They hold hands, but you still hear each letter speak. Example: flag → /f/ + /l/
2
Consonant Digraph Clue
2 letters = 1 new sound! They lock together to make a brand-new team sound. Example: ship → /sh/
