An interactive early literacy lesson where students analyze characters, setting, and problem-solution in The Three Billy Goats Gruff, then sequence and retell the beginning, middle, and end using illustrated story cards with a partner.
Use Slides 3–5 to synthesize: Characters (3 Goats, 1 Troll); Setting (River bridge to green meadow); Problem (Hungry goats vs. greedy bridge troll); Solution (Big Billy Goat knocks troll away).
Troll Bridge Retell • Early Literacy Lesson Plan Page 1 of 2: Instruction & Dialogic Reading
Partners share one set of 6 picture story cards. Together, they arrange the cards across their mat into Beginning (Cards 1–2), Middle (Cards 3–4), and End (Cards 5–6).
2 Partner A Retells (5 min)
Partner A is the Storyteller: touches each card and retells using the transition frame: "First... Next... Then... Finally..." Partner B acts as the Coach, listening and nodding.
3 Switch Roles (5 min)
Partners switch! Partner B is now the Storyteller and Partner A is the Coach. Encourage Partner B to use animated character voices (e.g., squeaky Little Goat, booming Troll).
4 Peer High-Five & Check (3 min)
Pairs confirm all 3 parts of the story were told: Did we tell who was in it? Did we tell the problem? Did we tell how it ended? Partners give a celebratory bridge clap!
Targeted Scaffolding & Differentiation
Emerging / ELL Support
Pre-sort cards into 3 piles. Provide visual word bank strips with pictures (Goat, Troll, Bridge). Prompt with: "What sound did the hooves make? Who was under the bridge?"
On-Level Scaffold
Students use the full 6-card sequence mat independently before oral retelling. Provide sentence starters: "First, the hungry goats... But under the bridge... At last..."
Advanced / Extension
Ask: "How would the story change if the Troll was friendly?" Have pairs act out the story as a mini-play or write one descriptive sentence under each B-M-E box.

Story Elements
Names all 3 goats, troll, bridge/meadow, and starvation problem clearly.
Names goats and troll; needs prompt for setting or specific problem.
Names 1–2 characters; confuses setting or problem with other stories.
Chronological Sequence
Sequences all picture cards in exact order; narrates B, M, and E smoothly.
Sequences with 1 card misplaced; narrates beginning and end, skips middle detail.
Cards placed randomly; tells isolated events out of chronological order.
Transition Vocabulary
Consistently uses transition words (First, Next, Then, Finally, Last).
Uses "and then... and then" repeatedly without varied sequence words.
Does not use temporal linking words; requires teacher prompting.
Watch Out For This Misconception: Students often confuse the order of the goats crossing (e.g., thinking Big Billy Goat crossed first). Reiterate the size progression: Smallest brother to biggest brother!
