Foundational Math Intervention Strategies
1 The "Touch & Move" Method
Kindergarten students who recount objects or count too fast have not yet mastered synchrony. Require them to physically slide each counter across a line into a counted pile: "Touch, slide, say the number."
2 Cardinality Reinforcement
When a child finishes counting 7 objects and you ask "How many are there?", struggling learners recount from 1. Train the Circle & State gesture: circle the entire set with hand and state: "There are 7!"
Teacher Facilitation Script (Ten-Frame Structure)
Step 3 Prompt
Teacher: "Look at our ten-frame. How many spots in the top row?" → Students: "Five!"
Teacher: "If the whole top row is full, do we need to count each dot 1, 2, 3, 4, 5?" → Students: "No! It is 5!"
Teacher: "Yes! We see 5 fast! Now look: 5 on top and 2 on the bottom. Think: 5... 6, 7! How many in all?" → "SEVEN!"

Key Teen Number Intervention Strategies
1 The "Say-Ten" Way of Counting
English teen words hide place value ("fourteen" puts 4 first). Expose base-10 structure with Say-Ten counting: 11 = "ten-one" • 12 = "ten-two" • 14 = "ten-four" Students instantly see that every teen has a full ten!
2 Ten-House (Anti-Reversal Writing)
Students hear "four" in fourteen and write 41. Draw a 2-room house: "The 10 moves into the first room first! The 1 stands for 10. The 4 sits in the next room: 14!"
Teacher Facilitation Script (Teen Decomposition)
Step 3 Prompt
Teacher: (Shows full 10-frame and 3 loose dots) "How many on the top frame?" → Students: "TEN!"
Teacher: "How many extra ones?" → Students: "THREE!"
Teacher: "Say it the Say-Ten way!" → Students: "TEN-THREE!"
Teacher: "Ten and three makes...?" → "THIRTEEN!"

Target: Counting to 100 by 1s & 10s
Daily 15-Minute Intervention Routine

Flashcards with numbers; review known numerals.
Step 2 (4 min)
New Number(s)
Teach decade shifts; 100-chart visual card matching.
Step 3 (3 min)

100-bead string, 10-stick bundles, and decade paths.
Step 4 (3 min)
Write & Order
Write decade bridges (29 → 30) and number order.
Step 5 (3 min)
1-to-1 Counting
Drop-in counting forward from any number (e.g. 58 → 63).
Key Decade Counting Intervention Strategies
1 The Decade Bridge ("9 is a Stop Sign")
Students get stuck at decade transitions (29 → ???). Teach the Stop Sign gesture: "When you hear 9, STOP! Hold up your hand. 9 tells you the next ten is coming! 29... STOP... THIRTY!"
2 Drop-In Flexible Counting
Struggling learners always reset to 1 when asked to count. Break the reset habit with daily "drop-in" prompts: "Drop into 48! Count: 48, 49, 50, 51, 52!" Never let them restart at 1.
Teacher Facilitation Script (Crossing the Decade Bridge)
Step 4 Prompt
Teacher: "Count with me: 26, 27, 28, 29..." (Holds up flat hand like stop sign)
Teacher: "Stop! We heard nine! What ten comes after the 20s?" → Students: "THIRTY!"
Teacher: "Step across the bridge!" → "THIRTY, thirty-one, thirty-two!"
Teacher: "YES! You bridged the decade like a champion!"

Unit Skill Focus Core Instructional Routines Target Benchmark Unit 1 (Lessons 1–10) Fact Fluency within 5 Number bonds to 5 (4+1, 3+2); plus & minus sign meaning; 5-frame instant decomposition; take-away actions. Instant mental fluency for addition & subtraction within 5 without finger counting. Unit 2 (Lessons 11–20) Partners to 10 (Making Ten) Ten-frame partners (9+1, 8+2, 7+3, 6+4, 5+5); missing addends (7 + __ = 10); counting on from larger addend. Instantly names the missing partner to 10 for any given single digit. Unit 3 (Lessons 21–30) Story Problems within 10 Concrete story mats (Add-To, Take-From, Put-Together); Result & Change Unknown; doubles facts (2+2, 3+3, 4+4, 5+5). Solves addition & subtraction word problems within 10 using objects, drawings, and equations.
Essential Operations Manipulatives
Two-Color Counters: Flip colors to visualize addends (e.g., 3 red + 2 yellow).
Part-Whole Mats: Graphic organizer for decomposing numbers into 2 parts.
Story Action Mats: Visual backgrounds (barn, pond, bus) for word problems.
Ten-Frame Sliders: Covers for instant missing addend visualization.

Foundational Operations Strategies
1 Five-Frame Visual Decomposition
Never let students count on fingers from 1 for facts to 5. Anchor to the 5-frame: 3 red + 2 yellow = 5 • 4 dots + 1 empty = 5 Students internalize the visual partners mentally!
2 Sign Actions & Equals Balance
Teach physical body cues for symbols: Plus (+): clap hands together ("join!"). Minus (−): karate chop away ("take!"). Equals (=): two arms parallel like a balanced scale ("same on both sides!").
Teacher Facilitation Script (Five-Frame Number Bond)
Step 3 Prompt
Teacher: (Shows 5-frame with 3 red chips and 2 yellow chips) "How many red?" → Students: "THREE!"
Teacher: "How many yellow?" → Students: "TWO!"
Teacher: "Is the five-frame full?" → Students: "YES! It is FIVE!"

Key Making Ten Intervention Strategies
1 Ten-Frame "Empty Spot" Recognition
When students see 8 counters on a ten-frame, train them to look at the empty spots: "There are 2 empty spots! That means 8 + 2 = 10!" Visualizing the empty spaces makes finding missing addends effortless.
2 Count On from the Larger Number
Never let students count on from the smaller number. For 2 + 7: "Turn it around! Put the BIG number in your brain: 7... now count on two: 8, 9! Seven plus two is nine!"
Teacher Facilitation Script (Missing Addend to 10)
Step 3 Prompt
Teacher: (Shows 10-frame with 7 red dots) "How many red dots do we have?" → Students: "SEVEN!"
Teacher: "Look at the empty spots. How many are empty?" → Students: "THREE!"
Teacher: "So what is seven's partner to make ten?" → "THREE! 7 + 3 = 10!"
Teacher: "If we have 10 and take 3 away, what is left?" → "SEVEN! 10 − 3 = 7!"

Key Story Problem Intervention Strategies
1 Act Out the Action (No Guessing!)
Struggling learners blindly add whatever numbers they hear. Enforce the Movie in Your Brain: "Close your eyes. Are more frogs arriving, or are frogs leaving? Arriving means PLUS! Leaving means MINUS!"
2 Doubles as Mental Anchors
Doubles facts are the easiest addition facts for early learners: 2+2=4 (eyes) • 3+3=6 (bug legs) • 4+4=8 (spider) • 5+5=10 (hands) Use doubles to bridge to Near Doubles (e.g. 3+4 is just 3+3 plus 1!).
Teacher Facilitation Script (Story Action Mat)
Step 5 Prompt
Teacher: "There were 4 frogs on the log. Place 4 green counters on the log!"
Teacher: "SPLASH! 2 frogs jumped into the water. What is the action?" → Students: "TAKE AWAY! MINUS!"
Teacher: "Slide 2 counters off the log. How many are left on the log?" → "TWO! 4 − 2 = 2!"
