Experiment: The Cloak of Invisibility
You will use the science of Refractive Index Matching to make solid glass vanish into liquid. Only a true master of light can see what is hidden.
Components
Vegetable Glycerin
Water
2 Pyrex Test Tubes or Small Beakers
Large glass beaker/jar
The Ritual
Fill the large jar halfway with water.
Drop one Pyrex tube into the water. Record what you see.
Now, fill the large jar with Glycerin.
Slowly lower the second Pyrex tube into the Glycerin.

Experiment: The Sith Ooze
Matter is usually passive. Today, you will forge a polymer that responds to magnetic "Force" fields.
Reactants
White Glue (PVA)
Liquid Starch or Borax Solution
Iron Sand / Fine Iron Filings
Neodymium Magnet (The Force)
The Forge
Mix 1/4 cup glue with 1 tbsp iron sand.
Slowly add starch while stirring until it clumps.
Knead the slime until smooth and black.
Hold the magnet near (not touching) the slime.

Water + Pyrex:
The glass is clearly visible. Light bends as it enters the glass, creating reflections and shadows at the boundaries.
Glycerin + Pyrex:
The glass "disappears." The refractive index of Glycerin (1.47) nearly matches Pyrex (1.474), so light travels through both as if they are the same substance.
Teacher Talking Points:
Ask students why they can see clear glass in air. (Light reflects/refracts). This experiment proves visibility depends on how light interacts with boundaries. If there is no change in light speed between materials, there is no boundary.
Mastery 2: Magnetic Slime
Matter Interaction Log (Expected):

Analysis 1 (Cross-linking):
The glue is a long-chain molecule (polymer). The borax/starch acts as a cross-linker, tying those chains together. This turns a liquid into a flexible solid.
Analysis 2 (Force Response):
More iron sand = more magnetic pull, but too much sand makes the polymer heavy and brittle, causing it to break rather than stretch.

Tactical Timeline
00 - 10m
The Invisibility Trick: Perform a "teacher demo" first. Hide a Pyrex tube in a beaker of glycerin and pull it out as if from nowhere. Use the slides to define Refractive Index.
10 - 25m
Phase 1 (Optics): Students compare water vs. glycerin. Key check: Jars must be totally clean. Even a fingerprint on the Pyrex can spoil the illusion.
25 - 50m
Phase 2 (The Ooze): Mixing iron sand into glue is messy—use gloves or deep trays. The starch must be added 1 tbsp at a time. The result should be pitch black.

Optics Troubleshooting
Pyrex Only: Standard glass has a slightly different refractive index and won't vanish as well as Pyrex/Borosilicate.
Air Bubbles: If students get bubbles inside the tube, it will be visible. Submerge the tube at an angle to let air escape.
Recycle: Glycerin can be filtered and reused for other classes!
Matter Manipulation
The Magnet Trap: Neodymium magnets are very strong. If they touch the slime, the iron sand will be nearly impossible to pull off the magnet. Wrap magnets in plastic wrap!
Ratio Control: If the slime is too sticky, add starch. If it snaps like plastic, add more glue.
Disposal: Do not wash iron sand down the sink. Throw waste in trash.
