Instructional Objectives
Students will successfully: 1) Navigate library stacks using spine call letters (FIC vs. Dewey numbers); 2) Utilize shelf markers to preserve book order; 3) Evaluate a self-selected book using the "Five-Finger Rule"; and 4) Identify personal genre interests on their Field Log.
1 Phase 1: Expedition Hook & The Golden Rule of Stacks (10 Min)
Whole Group • Carpet Area
Hook: Welcome class as "Library Trackers" setting off on a reading expedition. Hold up a misplaced book found behind the wrong shelf. "A book placed in the wrong spot is practically invisible—it's lost forever until an explorer finds it!"
The Shelf Marker Ritual: Demonstrate placing the marker flat against the shelf next to a target book before sliding it out. "Keep the placeholder sleeping on the shelf while you inspect the book. If you keep it, return the marker; if you put it back, your marker shows the exact nest it belongs in!"

3 Phase 3: The Stacks Expedition & Field Log Activity (15 Min)
Active Independent / Partner
Distribute Shelf Safari Field Logs and assign pairs or solo explorers. Students venture to assigned bays with their shelf marker.
Task 1: The Call Sign
Find 1 fiction book, record the author's spine letters, and check alphabetical neighbor books.
Task 2: Genre Radar
Explore 3 distinct genre zones (e.g., Graphic Novel, Mystery, Nature/Dewey 500s) and log favorites.
Task 3: Just-Right Check
Pick 1 candidate checkout book; read page 2 to complete the 5-Finger verification test.
4 Phase 4: Campfire Share, Book Pitch & Checkout (10 Min)
Closing & Circulation
Reconvene at the carpet circle. Call on 2–3 volunteers for a "30-Second Safari Pitch" : share the title, genre badge, and why an explorer teammate would enjoy it. Transition orderly into library circulation desk checkouts with respectful book handling.
Support & Scaffolds
Pair emerging readers with a reading navigator buddy.
Provide shelf markers with color-coded genre tags.
Accept drawn book covers or single-word genre ratings in the field log.
Extension & Leadership
Assign fast explorers as "Shelf Ranger Deputies" to help align spines flush with the front edge.
Challenge students to locate sub-genres (Historical Fiction vs. Fantasy).
Write a shelf-talker recommendation note for next week.
