The Four Architectural Pillars
1. Paragraph Indent Tab (0.5")
Press [Tab] once to indent the first line exactly 0.5 inches. Sub-sequent lines stay flush left. Never hit the spacebar 5 times.
No blank gap lines in MLA
2. Thesis Formula Claim+Roadmap
Topic + Debatable Stance + Supporting Reasons ("Because..."). Anchor at end of intro.
Arguable, not a fact
3. MLA In-Text (Author Page)
No comma between name & page. Terminal period placed outside parentheses: "..." (Lee 14).
Punctuation follows citation
4. Conclusion Reverse Funnel
- • Restate: Fresh claim wording.
- • Synthesize: Unite key points.
- • Clincher: "So what?" impact.
Never add new facts
1 Paragraph Indentation & Format Diagnostics
First-Line [Tab] Key (0.5") Rule vs. Block Style
Sample A: Manuscript Draft Format 1
Regular exercise improves cardiac endurance and sharpens mental focus. When adolescents engage in daily aerobic activity, oxygen levels in the brain increase dramatically.
Furthermore, participating in athletics cultivates resilience. Students learn how to navigate setbacks alongside teammates, preparing them for future collegiate challenges.
Sample B: Manuscript Draft Format 2
Regular exercise improves cardiac endurance and sharpens mental focus. When adolescents engage in daily aerobic activity, oxygen levels in the brain increase dramatically.
Furthermore, participating in athletics cultivates resilience. Students learn how to navigate setbacks alongside teammates, preparing them for future collegiate challenges.
A. Which draft correctly demonstrates MLA first-line [Tab] indentation?
Sample A Sample B
B. Technical Rule: Why must you press the [Tab] key (0.5" indent) instead of hitting the spacebar five times or inserting extra blank lines?
2 Thesis Statement Formulation Lab
Formula: Specific Topic + Debatable Claim + Roadmap
Thesis Equation: [Specific Topic] + [Arguable Stance] + [Because Reason 1 + Reason 2] Roadmap Rule
"Single-use plastic bottles take up to 450 years to decompose in public landfills."
Statement of Fact Vague Opinion Strong Thesis
Diagnosis:
"To reduce municipal landfill waste and protect marine ecosystems, cities should enact strict bans on single-use plastics."
Statement of Fact Vague Opinion Strong Thesis
Diagnosis:
Thesis Construction Challenge: Transform weak fact into debatable thesis
Weak Fact: "Artificial intelligence tools are now used by many middle and high school students."
Rewrite into an arguable thesis containing a clear stance and two distinct roadmap points:

3 MLA In-Text Citation Mechanics & Error Hunt
MLA 9th Edition
1. Standard Parenthetical
Author's last name + page number, NO comma: (Alvarez 58)
2. Signal Phrase Lead-In
If author named in sentence, list only the page: Alvarez notes ... (58).
3. Punctuation Placement
The terminal period is placed after the parentheses: "..." (Alvarez 58).
Diagnose the formatting error in each citation and write the corrected version on the line:
Sentence 1: Neuroscientist Matthew Walker stresses, "Sleep is the single most effective thing we can do to reset our brain and body health." (Walker, 107)
Error Description:
Corrected Citation:
Sentence 2: According to environmental researcher Elena Ramos, microplastics have been found in over 80% of urban waterways (Ramos 34).
Error Description:
Corrected Citation:
Sentence 3: Urban heat islands cause inner-city temperatures to rise by up to seven degrees during heat waves (Kowalski 89.)
Error Description:
Corrected Citation:
4 The Reverse-Funnel Conclusion Workshop
Three-Tier Architecture
Tier 1: Restate Thesis
Paraphrase the central claim using new vocabulary and inverted sentence structure. Never copy word-for-word.
Tier 2: Synthesize Points
Show how your body paragraphs connect together. Do not merely list facts—explain their combined meaning.
Tier 3: The "So What?" Clincher
Leave the reader with a broader global insight or future call to action. Never introduce brand-new facts!
Original Introduction Thesis Statement:
"Public libraries remain indispensable community institutions because they provide equitable access to technology and preserve free civic learning spaces for all citizens."
Task A: Draft a Restated Thesis (Tier 1): Rephrase the claim and reasons using fresh vocabulary.
Task B: Draft a "So What?" Global Clincher (Tier 3): Connect the preservation of libraries to the broader future of democratic society.

The Four Architectural Pillars • Instructional Checkpoints
1. Paragraph Indent Tab (0.5")
Press [Tab] key once (0.5" first-line indent). Subsequent lines wrap flush left. Continuous line spacing.
Pitfall: 5 spaces or empty lines.
2. Thesis Formula Claim+Roadmap
Must make an arguable assertion. A purely factual statement is disqualified from being a thesis.
Pitfall: "I am going to write about..."
3. MLA In-Text (Author Page)
No punctuation between author and page number. Sentence terminal period follows the parenthesis.
Pitfall: Placing period inside quotes.
4. Conclusion Reverse Funnel
Starts narrow (rephrased thesis) and expands outward to the global "So What?" clincher.
Pitfall: Introducing brand new facts.
1 Paragraph Indentation & Format Diagnostics • Key
2 pts total
A. Correct Sample: Sample B 1 pt
Diagnostic: Sample B correctly uses true first-line [Tab] indentation (0.5 inches) at the start of each paragraph, with second and third lines wrapping flush against the left margin and continuous uniform line spacing. Sample A displays improper block paragraphing with zero indentation and extra blank return gaps, which violates MLA manuscript conventions.
B. Technical Rule Rationale: 1 pt
Model Answer: The [Tab] key applies an exact, standard 0.5-inch paragraph indent that maintains precise alignment across word processors. Hitting the spacebar five times results in irregular widths depending on font kerning, while inserting extra blank lines disrupts the unbroken double-spaced flow required by MLA format.
2 Thesis Statement Formulation Lab • Evaluated Models
4 pts total
"Single-use plastic bottles take up to 450 years to decompose in public landfills."
STATEMENT OF FACT
Diagnosis: Objective, scientifically verifiable statistic. It contains no arguable stance, no policy position, and no roadmap for an essay to prove.
"To reduce municipal landfill waste and protect marine ecosystems, cities should enact strict bans on single-use plastics."
STRONG THESIS
Diagnosis: Model thesis statement: combines a clear, debatable policy claim ("cities should enact bans") with two explicit roadmap points (reducing landfill waste and protecting marine life).
