Assignment Purpose
Be a Critic, Not a Summarizer
What This is NOT: Plot Summary
- • Retelling every event from start to finish.
- • Listing plot events without analyzing why they matter.
- • Vague claims like "It was really scary and interesting."
Your Goal: Critical Recommendation
- • Take a bold, defensible stance on which story is the best.
- • Analyze the author's craft (irony, pacing, tone, diction).
- • Directly compare your champion against the competing stories.
Guiding Question: Which story delivers the most masterful suspense experience, and what specific literary techniques make it superior?
Evaluation Criteria
The Four Lenses of Suspense
1. Pacing & Escalation
How does the tension mount? Does the writer drag out the dread second by second, or strike with sudden jarring momentum?
2. Irony & Plot Twists
Does the story leverage dramatic irony (readers knowing before characters) or sharp situational twists that overturn expectations?
3. Psychological Dread
Is the terror born in the character's unravelling mind (Poe) or masked behind eerie politeness and poisonous hospitality (Dahl)?
4. Climax & Lasting Impact
How unforgettable is the finale? Does it close with a scream of confession, chilling giggles, or a silent cup of tea?
Use at least two of these lenses to build your comparative arguments.
Essay Architecture
Structure of a Winning Review
1
Hook & Verdict Claim
Hook reader with suspense theory, introduce the 3 tales, and declare your winning story with clear reasoning.
Introduction
2
Core Craft Strengths
Deep dive into your story's best techniques (pacing, irony, symbolism) with cited quotes and craft breakdowns.
Body Paragraphs
3
The Counter-Comparison
Acknowledge what the rival stories do well, then prove why your chosen story outshines them in psychological impact.
Counter-Argument
4
Final Recommendation
Synthesize your judgment, give a star rating, and specify what kind of suspense reader must experience this story.
Conclusion
Key Requirement: You must reference all three stories at least once to prove comparative evaluation!
Textual Evidence Formula
The Critic's Evidence Sandwich
1 Context & Claim
Introduce the specific scene and identify the author's intentional technique before quoting.
2 Direct Snippet
Integrate a concise, high-impact quote. Never drop a huge block quote without trimming fat.
3 Craft Breakdown
Explain how specific words create suspense and why this surpasses rival stories.
Critic's Model Snippet:
"While Poe's narrator relies on shrill repetition, Dahl masterfully weaponizes quiet domesticity. When Mary giggles as the police remark the weapon is likely 'right under our very noses,' Dahl triggers a superior breed of dark dramatic irony that forces the audience to become complicit conspirators in the murder."
Notice how the analysis connects the quote directly to reader psychology!
The Writing Challenge
Make Your Claim. Defend Your Champion.
Reviewers don't just state opinions—they build airtight cases using textual forensic evidence.
Poe
Psychological unraveling & heartbeat paranoia
Dahl (Lamb)
Wickedly funny dramatic irony & the perfect murder
Dahl (Landlady)
Slow-burn poisoned tea & stuffed specimen terror

Chosen Champion Story __________________________________________
Assignment Mission: Write an analytical review defending which story is the supreme master of suspense among the three read. Your essay must articulate a distinct critical stance, analyze specific literary craft devices (pacing, irony, psychological dread), provide direct textual citations, and evaluate your chosen champion against the other two contenders.
Evaluation Criteria
4 | Exemplary (100-90%)
3 | Proficient (89-80%)
2 | Developing (79-70%)
1 | Emerging (<70%)
1. Thesis & Critical Stance
Weight: 20 Points
Clear, defensible claim asserting superiority over rival stories with specific craft reasoning.
Commanding & Nuanced: Articulates an insightful, persuasive thesis that establishes exact reasons (pacing, irony, dread) why one story outclasses the others.
Clear & Defensible: States a clear recommendation and names the champion story with valid reasons, though rationale may be somewhat predictable.
Basic or Broad: States a preference, but resembles personal opinion ("I liked it best") rather than an analytical claim grounded in author craft.
Vague or Missing: Lacks a distinct thesis; does not take a clear stance on which story is superior; reads merely as general summary.
2. Textual Evidence & Citation
Weight: 20 Points
Direct quotes smoothly integrated with MLA citations from the chosen and competing stories.
Seamless & Precise: Skillfully weaves multiple relevant, trimmed quotes into sentences; embeds accurate parenthetical citations throughout.
Sufficient & Accurate: Incorporates appropriate text quotes to support key claims; citations are generally accurate with minor punctuation errors.
Uneven or Dropped: Relies on isolated quotes without context ("quote bombing"); limited evidence from competing stories; inconsistent citations.
Sparse or Inaccurate: Minimal or absent direct quotes; relies heavily on vague recollection; no formal citations provided.
