Pro-Tutor Strategies (Keep It High-Octane!)
The "Echo Reading" Assist: If the student struggles with pacing, read a complex sentence aloud first, emphasizing punctuation, and have them immediately "echo" it back.
Error Self-Correction: Say, "Stop! Red flag on the track. Re-read that last sentence and see if you spot the oil spill."

MUDDY MOTORS
STAGE 1: HIGH-SPEED READING PASSAGE
Jax adjusted the strap on his helmet and zipped his heavy riding boots. Today was the final practice before the annual Muddy Creek Rally , and the track was in rough shape. A massive thunderstorm the night before had turned the red clay track into a swampy soup of slick silt and deep, treacherous puddles.
Beside him stood his older sister, Clara, who was already dressed in her protective chest protector and goggles. Clara was an expert racer, and she knew that a wet track required more than just courage; it required serious mechanical knowledge.
"Listen up, Jax," Clara said, pointing a muddy finger at the knobby tires of Jax's bike, which he had nicknamed The Muddy Monster . "The track has zero traction today. If you throttle up too fast in the turns, your rear tire will spin out and spit mud. Keep your RPMs low and stay light on your clutch."
Jax nodded, but his heart was hammering against his ribs. He kicked the starter lever. The engine sputtered, roared to life, and then let out a wet, wheezing cough before completely dying. Jax groaned. "Not again! Why is it stalling now?"
Clara knelt in the dirt next to the exhaust pipe. "Check your air box, Jax. In deep mud, water and wet silt can get sucked right into the engine's filter."
Sure enough, when Jax popped open the plastic guard, the air filter was choked with thick, gooey clay. He ran back to their gear crate, grabbed a clean replacement filter, and sprayed a fine layer of filter oil over it. He carefully installed the fresh part, secured the cover, and kicked the starter once more.
The engine responded instantly, emitting a crisp, rhythmic hum that echoed through the trees. Jax revved the throttle, feeling the power vibrate up through the handle grips.
"Ready to ride?" Clara yelled over the engine's roar, flipping her goggles down. Jax pulled his own goggles down, clicked his boots into the foot pegs, and replied, "Let's sling some mud!"

PIT CREW ANALYSIS
STAGE 2: COMPREHENSION CHALLENGE
1. Why does the clay track pose a danger to Jax's ride today?
A The track has too many steep jumps.
B The track has wet clay and zero traction.
C There are too many other riders on it.
D The starting gate is completely broken.
2. What does the word "traction" mean as used in paragraph 3?
A The power of an engine's revving.
B The depth of a puddle on a trail.
C The grip of a tire on a road or track.
D The metal frame that protects a rider.
3. What mechanical issue caused Jax's engine to stall? How did he fix it?
4. Why is Clara's advice crucial for Jax's success today? Use evidence from the story.

GEAR SHIFT GRAMMAR
STAGE 3: LITERACY TUNE-UP
Part A: Sputtering Sentences (3 pts)
These motor sentences are sputtering! Re-write them correctly on the lines below, fixing capitalization, punctuation, and tense errors.
SPUTTER: last saturday jax ride his dirt bike in the woods and splash mud everywhere
SPUTTER: do you think clara will helped jax clean the air box after the race
Part B: Tire Traction Homophones (5 pts)
Choose the correct homophone in the parentheses to give the sentence solid traction.
The dirt bike was humming, and (its / it's) engine sounded brand new. Write answer:
(Their / There / They're) going to line up at the muddy starting gate soon. Write answer:
Jax had to decide (wear / where) he should steer past the massive puddle. Write answer:
Always check to make sure (your / you're) safety helmet is fastened tight. Write answer:
Part C: Contraction Clutch (4 pts)
Unclamp these contractions! Identify the two words that make up each bolded contraction, or combine the words.
1. "He couldn't get the engine started." couldn't = +
2. "Let's sling some mud on the track!" Let's = +
3. "Jax was sure they'll win the race." they'll = +
4. Combine: we + are Contraction:

STAGE 4: THE ULTIMATE TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP
Pencil-and-Paper Rules (No Dice or Cards Needed!)
Choose Your Rider: One player is Rider Orange and the other is Rider Blue. Grab different colored pencils.
Starting Grid: Place your pencil tip on the START block.
Take Turns: Players take turns tackling the 10 Track Challenges on Page 2 in order (Checkpoint 1 to 10).
Sling Some Mud: Solve a Checkpoint Challenge correctly? Color in or draw your tire track through that numbered space on the board. Get it wrong? You "stall" (remain at your current checkpoint for that turn).
Winner: The first rider to successfully navigate past Checkpoint 10 and cross the FINISH LINE is the Track Champion!

WILD TRACKS
THE SCIENCE OF MUD AND SPEED
Building the Perfect Dirt Track
Have you ever wondered why professional dirt bike tracks aren't just made of regular dirt from a backyard? To handle high-speed jumps and sharp turns, racing tracks must be carefully constructed by experts. Engineers design dirt tracks using a precise recipe of three primary soil elements: clay, sand, and silt .
The Friction Formula
Each ingredient serves a specific mechanical purpose. Clay acts like a natural glue. It binds the track together, helping it hold its shape under the pressure of heavy tires. However, too much clay becomes incredibly slick when wet. Sand is mixed in to help water drain quickly and to create rough texture. This texture is vital because it increases friction —the resistance that occurs when two surfaces slide against each other. Without enough friction, tires cannot grip the ground, which results in a loss of traction .
The Magic of Loam
The absolute favorite soil blend for most riders is called loam . Loam is a balanced mixture of sand, silt, and clay. It absorbs water well without turning into deep, slippery puddles, and it allows tires to "bite" deep into the dirt on fast curves, known as berms .
Centripetal Force in the Turns
When a rider accelerates into a curved wall of dirt, physics takes over. The curved dirt wall pushes back against the bike's tires, helping combat centripetal force —the force that pulls a turning object outward. By understanding how different soils handle water and forces, engineers and riders work together to safely push the limits of speed and control.

TRACK INSPECTION
STAGE 5: NONFICTION COMPREHENSION
1. According to the text, what is the main risk of having too much clay in a track?
A The track becomes extremely slick when wet.
B The dirt track will turn entirely into sand.
C The dirt will blow away on windy days.
D It stops the bike engine from turning over.
2. What role does sand play in track construction?
A It acts like glue to keep the dirt bound tightly.
B It helps water drain and increases crucial friction.
C It blocks centripetal force in tight curves.
D It decreases the speed of racing engines.
3. What is "loam" and why is it highly favored by professional dirt bike riders?
4. How do physics and dirt chemistry work together when a rider takes a sharp turn on a berm?
