1 The Hook: Mystery Clues (10 Minutes)
Concept Hook: Show a backpack or "detective bag" containing a water bottle, a small towel, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Ask: "Where am I going? What is my main plan?"
Instructional Goal: Connect the physical items (clues/details) to the main goal (beach trip / main idea). Explain that texts work the same way—authors hide clues that point to one main idea.
ELL Scaffold: Pair visual items with vocabulary cards (e.g., "sunscreen", "beach"). Point to each and repeat clearly, encouraging total physical response (TPR) gestures.
2 Direct Instruction & House Anchor (15 Minutes)
Define the Concept: Introduce the Main Idea as the "roof" of a house, and the Supporting Details as the pillars holding it up. Without details, the roof falls!
Model the Strategy (I Do): Project Slide 3. Read aloud the practice passage about "Busy Bees". Highlight vocabulary as you go (e.g., "pollen", "hive").
Thinking Aloud: "The author says bees carry pollen, clean the hive, and feed the queen. All these clues are about the jobs bees have. So, the main idea is: Bees work hard to keep their hive alive."

3 Guided Practice: Clue Hunt (15 Minutes)
Step 1: Distribute the Student Handout. Preview the text title: "Deep-Sea Glowers". Ask students to locate the bold vocabulary words (bioluminescence, depths, shield) and trace or circle them.
Step 2 (We Do): Read Paragraph 1 chorally. Ask: "What is this paragraph talking about? Let's highlight some clue sentences."
Scaffolded Questioning: Guide students to find detail sentences about how fish glow to make light. Write the first detail in Clue Box #1 on the graphic organizer together as a whole class.
4 Independent Practice & Writing (15 Minutes)
Step 3 (You Do): Instruct students to read Paragraph 2 in partners or independently. They must locate and write Clue #2 and Clue #3 in their organizers.
The Frame: Model how to transfer the details into the Summary Paragraph Frame on page 2 of the student handout. Walk the room to provide descriptive feedback.
Check-For-Understanding (CFU): Ensure students are writing complete sentences in the summary frame and not just copy-pasting unrelated phrases.
ELD LEVEL SUPPORT MATRIX
Emerging
Provide pre-highlighted texts. Allow students to draw details instead of writing complete sentences. Pair with a bilingual peer.
Expanding
Use word banks for blank spots. Ask them to write down 2 clues independently. Encourage reading sentences aloud.
Bridging
Challenge students to write a custom summary paragraph without the frame, including a concluding transition sentence.
Exit Ticket Strategy
Students submit their completed Paragraph Frames. Check: Did they identify that the deep-sea creatures use bioluminescence to survive?
Observation Focus
Are students tracking details, or are they selecting random sentences? Target students who confuse interesting but minor details with supporting evidence.

Read the secret file below. Hunt for details that tell you the Main Idea .
CLASSIFIED TEXT: DEEP-SEA GLOWERS DO NOT DISTRIBUTE
Deep under the ocean, where the sun never shines, amazing creatures live in pitch-black darkness. Many of these animals have a super power called bioluminescence . This means they can make their own glowing light from their bodies.
These animals use their lights in clever ways to stay alive. First, some fish use glowing lights like a flashlight to hunt for food. Second, other animals use sudden flashes of light to scare away predators. Finally, many deep-sea creatures use soft, glowing patterns to find friends in the dark water. Glowing light is their ultimate tool for survival.
