Students master basic paragraph logic by treating writing as physical construction. Using tactile, color-coded blocks of text representing Claims (Orange) , Evidence (Teal) , and Reasoning (Green) , they learn that a structural collapse happens when components are placed out of order or omitted entirely.
Objective: Students will be able to evaluate, order, and construct a cohesive argumentative paragraph containing a claim, relevant evidence, and logical reasoning with 100% architectural integrity.

Phase 1: Site Inspection & Core Briefing
1. Site Inspection (Warm-Up)
10 Minutes
Display a "Collapsed Paragraph" on the board (a paragraph that starts with evidence, has no reasoning, and ends with a claim). Ask: "If this paragraph were a real house, would you sleep in it? Why or why not?" Guide students to recognize that without a clear order, the structural logic collapses. Introduce the three core building materials.
2. The Blueprint Briefing (Direct Instruction)
15 Minutes
Utilize the **Paragraph Blueprint Slides** to model the three core building blocks:
1. Foundation (Claim)
States what you are building. Must be solid.
2. Pillars (Evidence)
Supports the structure. Proven facts.
3. Mortar (Reasoning)
Binds it together. Explains the "so what?".

3. The Build Phase (Tactile Group Work)
20 Minutes
Group students in pairs. Distribute the **Structure Strips Activity** page and a **Building Mat**.
Task: Cut out the mixed-up sentence strips. Categorize each by color/function.
Assembly: Arrange them on the Building Mat in structural order (Claim → Evidence → Reasoning → Evidence → Reasoning).
Inspection: Once completed, groups raise a hand for a "Code Inspection". The teacher reviews and signs off on their mats before they glue them down.
4. Structural Engineering (Independent Work)
10 Minutes
Now transition from sorting to creating. Distribute the **Paragraph Construction Worksheet**. Students work independently to design their own paragraph blueprint by planning their own Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning, then writing a final paragraph in the designated workshop section.
5. Inspector Check-Out (Exit Ticket)
5 Minutes
Have students swap worksheets with a neighbor. Using the **Draft Inspector Rubric**, partners inspect each other's paragraphs. Students mark their neighbor's foundation (Claim), pillars (Evidence), and mortar (Reasoning) with colored highlighters.
Blueprint Scaffolding & Troubleshooting
Under Construction (Scaffold)
Provide sentence starters for the Mortar/Reasoning strips (e.g., "This proves that..." or "Because of this..." ). Pre-group the strips for students so they are only ordering instead of categorizing.
Master Builder (Extension)
Give students blank strips. Challenge them to write a "Counter-Claim Pillar" (evidence representing an opposing view) and construct a paragraph that refutes it with fresh Reasoning.
Common Site Violations (Misconceptions)

Students often write reasoning that repeats the claim without explaining how the evidence actually proves the claim. Remind them: Mortar binds the bricks; it doesn't just rest on top.

The Three Core Materials
To construct a sturdy argument paragraph, you must place your building materials in the correct order.
1. THE CLAIM
The foundation brick. It states exactly what your paragraph is proving.
2. THE EVIDENCE
The support pillars. Solid facts, quotes, or data from real research.
3. THE REASONING
The binder mortar. It glues the pillars to the foundation by explaining why .

The Claim
A paragraph cannot stand without a clear main argument. The claim is your answer to the research prompt, condensed into a single clear sentence.

If you write evidence without stating your claim first, readers won't understand what you are building.

Your claims are just opinions until they are supported. Strong evidence is derived from studies, statistics, or experts.

Reasoning explains how your evidence supports your claim. It bridges the gap for the reader so they don't have to guess.

Safety Code Notice: Each completed paragraph draft must undergo a rigorous material and structural inspection. Review the criteria below before submitting your final blueprint or inspecting a peer's site.
STRUCTURAL COMPONENT 4 • MASTER BUILDER 3 • JOURNEYMAN 2 • APPRENTICE 1 • UNDER REPAIR 01. Foundation The Claim Claim is exceptionally clear, highly focused, and takes a definitive, debatable stance on the prompt. Claim is clear and debatable, though word choice could be slightly tighter or more precise. Claim is present but is too broad, merely rephrases the prompt, or is a simple fact. Foundation is missing or lacks any stance. Readers cannot tell what is being built. 02. Support Pillars The Evidence Includes 2+ solid, highly credible facts, quotes, or statistics that perfectly back up the claim. Includes 1-2 facts, but one might be slightly weak or not directly related to the claim. Only includes 1 weak piece of evidence, or uses personal opinion instead of verified research. No pillars present. The paragraph contains only unsupported claims and assertions. 03. Binding Mortar The Reasoning Explains exactly how the evidence proves the claim, showing masterful critical thinking. Explains the connection, but reasoning slightly repeats the claim instead of expanding. Reasoning is extremely brief, vague, or fails to connect the evidence back to the foundation. No reasoning. Evidence blocks are placed next to claims with no logical binding mortar. 04. Site Polish Transitions Flow is completely seamless with strong transition words. Zero spelling or grammar errors. Good overall flow. Has minor spelling or punctuation errors that do not affect understanding. Rough transitions. Sentences feel choppy. Several grammatical errors distract the inspector. Severe structural defects. Many errors make the argument incredibly difficult to follow.
