Sound Blending Teacher Guide Teacher Guide & Lesson Plan
Sound Blending Bonanza
Kindergarten / Grade 1
Estimated Duration: 35–45 min
Science of Reading: Why Continuous Blending Matters
Early readers often struggle with segment-to-blend phonics (e.g., saying "/c/ ... /a/ ... /t/" in isolation, then forgetting the first sound). This lesson utilizes continuous blending (or connected phonation): students sustain the initial consonant sound directly into the medial vowel without pausing, dramatically decreasing working-memory load and preventing the addition of the intrusive schwa sound (e.g., stopping "/kuh/").
1. Isolate Phonemes Tap sound dots for 1-to-1 phoneme correspondence.
2. Connect Sounds Slide finger left-to-right along the visual blending track.
3. Synthesize & Read Fast snap to attach meaning to oral speech and print.
Lesson Sequence & Pacing Guide
5 min
Phonemic Warm-Up: Mystery Word Slider
Conduct oral blending without print. Say stretched sounds: "/s/ ... /u/ ... /n/—what word?" Students respond chorally: "Sun!" Repeat with 3–4 words using arm tapping (shoulder, elbow, wrist).
10 min
Direct Instruction with Sound Slider Slides
Display Sound Slider Slides (Slides 1–4). Explicitly model the 3 steps: 1) Tap dot, 2) Slide continuous vowel arrow, 3) Snap the word. Model with f-i-n and h-o-p . Ensure students do not insert schwas ("/fuh-ih-nuh/").
15 min
Independent / Partner Practice (Worksheet)
Distribute the 2-page Sound Blending Practice Worksheet . Students physically touch each sound button, slide along the directional arrow, match to pictures, and write words. Teacher circulates with anecdotal clipboard.
5 min
Synthesis & Self-Check
Students partner-share their decodable sentence drawings from Part E. Complete the self-reflection checklist on Page 2 and celebrate blending growth.
3 Multi-Sensory Body Anchors for Blending
Arm Tapping
Left arm straight out: Tap shoulder (consonant 1), bend of elbow (vowel), wrist (consonant 2). Slide hand from shoulder down to wrist to blend.
Finger Sweeper
Students place index finger on the paper. Press firmly on each sound dot, then slide across the desk smoothly without lifting the finger.
Sing the Vowel
Teach students to "hold out the vowel note" (e.g., "faaaaat" ) until the final crisp stop sound snaps the word shut.
