Most atoms want a full outer shell of electrons.
Full = Stable
When an atom is full, it is calm and stops reacting.

Reactive atoms are "lonely" or "restless." They have an incomplete outer shell.

They will STEAL or GIVE AWAY electrons to get to 8.
Example: Sodium (Na)
Sodium has only 1 outer electron. It is very unstable and ready to react!
Trading to be Stable
When atoms gain or lose electrons, they become IONS.
Cations
Atoms that LOSE an electron.
Now they have a Positive (+) charge.
Think: "Ca+ion" has a plus sign!
Anions
Atoms that GAIN an electron.
Now they have a Negative (-) charge.
Think: "A-Negative-Ion"
The Ionic Bond
Opposites Attract!
A Positive Cation and a Negative Anion pull toward each other like magnets.
The Result:
They stick together to form a Compound (like Salt!).
