Objective
Students will identify and define location words (prepositions) during a read-aloud to build a shared vocabulary for spatial relationships.
Materials
Picture book (e.g., Rosie's Walk )
Large chart paper
Detective magnifying glasses
Markers (Green for words)

Set the Stage
Use the slides to introduce the "Word Detective" role. Hand out magnifying glasses (paper ones work great!). Explain that we aren't just reading for the story; we are hunting for "where" words.

Stop and Spot
When you reach a page with a clear spatial relationship (e.g., "The hen went under the beehive"), pause. Ask: "Where did Rosie go?" Prompt students to use the specific word.

Build the Chart
Write the word on the chart. Draw a quick simple sketch next to it (e.g., a ball under a line) to provide a visual cue for the meaning.

Facilitation Tips
Read each instruction twice at a slow, clear pace.
Pause for 30–60 seconds between steps to allow for drawing.
Emphasize the location word with your voice (e.g., "The cat is under the tree").
Do not show your own drawing until the very end!

Assessment Focus
This rubric evaluates the student's ability to demonstrate understanding of location words through both visual representation (illustration) and oral/written language.
Criteria Developing Proficient Exceeds Location Word Use Does not include a clear location word in sentence. Uses one target location word (in, on, under, etc.) correctly. Uses multiple or complex location words (behind, between). Visual Match Picture does not match the chosen location word. Picture clearly shows the spatial relationship. Picture is detailed and enhances the description. Writing/Dictation Sentence is incomplete or does not make sense. Sentence is complete (e.g., "The cat is on the mat"). Writes independently with correct spacing or punctuation.
