Lesson 66: Open & Closed Syllables
Irregular Word: friend
Grade 1-2 • Tier 1 / Tier 2
Syllable Structure Rule
A closed syllable ends in a consonant; the vowel is shut in and makes its short sound (e.g., got, met). An open syllable ends in a vowel; the vowel is free to say its name/long sound (e.g., go, me, ro-bot).
CVC = Short CV = Long
Irregular Word: friend
Phonemes: 4 sounds /f/ /r/ /ĕ/ /n/ /d/. The letters f , r , n , and d are fully decodable. The letters ie make the unexpected short /ĕ/ sound (Heart Part).

Day 1 & Day 2 Instructional Scripts
Explicit UFLI Routine
Step 1-4 • Visual, Auditory & Blending Drills (5-7 min) Days 1-4
Visual Drill: Flash letter cards (a, e, i, o, u, sh, ch, th, ck). Students state letter name and sound.
Auditory Drill: Teacher produces sounds /ō/, /ē/, /ī/, /ū/, /ā/. Students write the vowel letter on whiteboards.
Blending Board: Build contrast chains: got → go , not → no , hen → he , met → me , wet → we , sob → so .
Step 5 • Teach Open vs Closed Syllables (8 min)
Teacher Script: "Look at the word got . The vowel is followed by a consonant t . The consonant shuts the door! When the door is closed, the vowel is squeezed and makes its short sound: /ŏ/, /g/-/ŏ/-/t/, got. This is a closed syllable ."
Teacher Script: "Now watch what happens when I take away the letter t . Now we have go ! Is there a consonant closing the door? No! The door is wide open! When the syllable is open, the vowel is free to shout its own name: /ō/, /g/-/ō/, go. This is an open syllable !"
Step 6 • Irregular Heart Word Routine: friend (5 min)
1. Say & Count Sounds: Teacher says "friend" . Students tap 4 sounds: /f/ /r/ /ĕ/ /n/ /d/.
2. Map Regular Letters: Draw 4 sound boxes. Box 1: f (/f/). Box 2: r (/r/). Box 4: n (/n/). Box 5: d (/d/).
3. Identify the Heart Part: "What vowel sound do you hear in friend? We hear /ĕ/! We expect letter 'e', but in friend , the /ĕ/ sound is spelled with letters ie ! We must learn this part by heart." Draw a heart over ie .
4. Practice: Students air-write and write friend 3 times while saying: "f-r-i-e-n-d, friend" .
Day 2 Routine • Dividing V/CV Syllables (10 min)
Teach students to locate vowels first, then look at the consonant between them. Most English words divide after the first vowel (V / CV ), creating an open first syllable:
ro • bot
(Open / Closed)
mu • sic
(Open / Closed)
ti • ger
(Open / Closed)
Prompt: "Is the vowel locked in or free to shout its name?" Page 2 of 2

The Syllable Door Rule
Closed Syllable
g o t
The consonant shuts the door ! The vowel is locked in and makes its short sound (/ŏ/).
Open Syllable
g o
No consonant at the end! The door is wide open and the vowel shouts its long name (/ō/)!
Key: Consonant behind vowel = Closed • Vowel at the end = Open

Toby had a small metal ro•bot . The ro•bot had two red knobs and a silver bell. One hot day, Toby lost his tin pal by the old red shed. Toby was sad. "I must go and hunt for him," he said. "No one can leave a friend alone!"
Toby went to the big glass ho•tel down the lane. He saw a pup, a cat, and a red van, but he saw no ro•bot . Next, he ran to the shop on the hill. Sweet mu•sic came from the open door. Toby tapped his leg to the drum beat, but his friend was not there.
"Will I ever find him?" Toby began to sob . He sat on a wet log. Just then, he heard a beep-beep . A tin arm poked out of a brown box! The little ro•bot began to hum.
"You are safe!" cried Toby. "Now we can go home. A true friend is the best gift of all." So Toby and the ro•bot walked back with a happy grin.

Leo sat on his rug with a sheet of thick tan pa•per . He got his box of wax crayons. Leo drew stripes of black and orange. "Look at this fierce ti•ger face!" he cheered. Just then, his best friend Sam came to the back gate.
"Can I go into your club?" asked Sam. "We can set up a tent in the yard." Leo nodded. "Yes! No one can enter unless they have a ti•ger badge. Take this scrap of pa•per and make your stripes."
The two boys crawled into the tent. It was cool and dim inside. "Shh, we must stay si•lent like a wild cat," whispered Leo. They crept on hands and knees without a single rustle.
Then Sam tapped a pot like a drum to make funny mu•sic . They laughed so hard their sides hurt. "A club is no fun alone," Leo smiled at Sam. "Every good ti•ger needs a loyal friend !"

In early spring, Maya buried a dark brown bulb deep in a clay pot. She kept the pot on the sunny deck. "It is a se•cret bulb," she told her best friend , Dan. "Soon it will wake up and grow!"
Days went by. Maya checked the pot each dawn, but no green stem popped up. She began to sigh. "I guess no plant will come," she said sadly. Dan shook his head. "You must have patience and fo•cus on care. We should give it a cup of fresh water."
Dan helped her water the dry dirt. They set the pot where warm sun fell upon it. Then came three days of soft spring rain. At that exact mo•ment , a miracle happened in the mud!
A slender green shoot pushed up into the light. At the top sat a bright red tu•lip ready to o•pen wide! Maya ran to get Dan. "Go look!" she yelled. "Our se•cret tu•lip is here! Thank you for being such a sweet friend ."
