What is a Syllable Juncture?
A syllable juncture is where two syllables meet. Look at these two common spelling patterns:
1. VCCV Pattern (Consonant-Consonant)
Divide the syllables between the consonants. This usually makes the first vowel short.
hap - pen | sum - mer
2. VCV Pattern (Vowel-Consonant-Vowel)
Divide the syllables before the consonant. This usually makes the first vowel long.

The Silent "e" Drop
When a base word ends with a silent e and the suffix begins with a vowel (-ed, -ing, -er, -est), drop the e first!
bake + ing → baking
hope + ed → hoped
skate + er → skater
💡 If the suffix starts with a consonant (like -ly), KEEP the e!

The Doubling Rule (1-1-1)
If a word has 1 syllable, 1 short vowel, and ends in 1 consonant, you double that final consonant before adding a vowel suffix!
stop + ed → stopped
run + ing → running
sad + er → sadder
💡 Does NOT apply to words ending in w, x, or y!

VCCV Syllable Junctures
When a vowel-consonant-consonant-vowel pattern appears, split the word between the two consonants. This keeps the first vowel sound short!
