Lesson Objective
Students will read and spell words with the /j/ sound using three reliable spelling patterns: j- (initial), -dge (after short vowels), and -ge (after long vowels or consonants).

Step 2: The Soldier Guard (-dge)
Teacher: "Now say dodge . What sound is right before the /j/ at the end? It's /ŏ/ - a short vowel! Short vowels are weak and need a guard. We use dge. The letters d-g-e work together to make the /j/ sound and stand guard. Let's tap: /d/ - /ŏ/ - /j/ (3 taps) but spell it d-o-d-g-e."
