1. The Hook (Pronunciation Puzzle)
Write SCUBA and FBI on the board. Ask for two volunteers to read them aloud.
Ask: "Why did [Student A] read SCUBA like a whole word, but [Student B] read FBI letter by letter? They both look like just a bunch of capital letters."
2. Key Concepts
Acronym: Focus on the "word" aspect. Acro- means tip/height, and -onym means name. It becomes a new "name" or word.
Initialism: Focus on the "initial" aspect. We only use the initials (letters) to say it.
