Sound Suspects Teacher Briefing Detective Briefing
Lesson 1: Sound Suspects (CVC Words)
Case File ID
PDA-001
Instructional Objective
Students will isolate and pronounce initial, medial vowel, and final sounds in three-phoneme (CVC) words. They will demonstrate how to blend these sounds to solve word "mysteries."
Evidence Needed
Sound Suspects Slides
CVC Evidence Cards
Case File 01 Workbook
Magnifying glasses
1. The Hook: Missing Vowel (5 mins)
Show "C_T" on the board. Explain that without the medial sound (vowel), we can't identify the suspect! Is it a CAT? A COT? A CUT?
2. Direct Instruction: The Lineup (10 mins)
Use Slides to introduce the "Lineup" method:
Beginning: Suspect's hat (Shoulder tap).
Middle: Suspect's badge (Elbow tap).
Ending: Suspect's shoes (Wrist tap).
Model tapping out "B-U-G" on your arm and sliding your hand down for the blend.
3. Guided Practice (15 mins)
Small groups use CVC Evidence Cards . They must "interrogate" (segment) and then "close the case" (blend).
4. Independent: Case File 01 (15 mins)
Detectives complete Case File 01 . They identify missing vowels and match suspects to their picture evidence.
5. Center: Crime Lab (Ongoing)
Students sort pictures into vowel bins (A, E, I, O, U) based on their medial sounds.
Detective Support (Differentiation)
Rookie Support
Focus on initial and final sounds first. Use tactile letters to physically "plug in" the vowel badge.
Expert Sleuths
Provide "Nonsense Word" suspects (e.g., VIB, ZOT) to ensure mastery of decoding over memorization.

Case File ID
PDA-002
Instructional Objective
Students will identify common consonant blends (bl, st, tr) and digraphs (sh, ch, th, wh). They will understand that digraphs make *one* sound, while blends keep their individual sounds but work together.
Evidence Needed

1. The Hook: Partner Patrol (5 mins)
Explain that some consonants are "Blends" (two voices) and some are "Digraphs" (one voice).
2. Direct Instruction (10 mins)
Blends
Two letters, two sounds (bl ack).
Digraphs
Two letters, one new sound (sh ip).
3. Guided Practice: Blueprint Mapping (15 mins)
Use the Hush Signal for digraphs and Shake Signal for blends. Project words on the board for quick-fire classification.
4. Independent Work: Case File 02 (15 mins)
Detectives sort words into the "Two-Voice" (Blend) or "One-Voice" (Digraph) folders in their workbooks.
5. Center: Code Cracker (Ongoing)

Case File 03
1. The Hook: The Silent Stinger (5 mins)
Introduce "Silent E" as a magical suspect who stay quiet but makes other vowels "yell their names." Demonstrate with "TAP" vs. "TAPE."
2. Direct Instruction (10 mins)
Silent E: Stays quiet, gives power to the first vowel.
Vowel Teams: "When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking."
3. Guided Practice: The Name Game (15 mins)
Write short vowel words on the board. When you add a "Silent E" sticker, the class shouts the new word's name (long sound).
4. Independent: Case File 03 (15 mins)
Detectives transform short vowel words into long vowel words and search for vowel teams in case notes.
5. Center: Vowel Team Trail (Ongoing)
Students sort evidence cards by their long vowel sounds (A, E, I, O, U) in the Crime Lab.
Rookie Support
Use "Magic E Wands" (popsicle sticks) to physically move the 'e' to the end of CVC words.

1. The Hook: Giant Word Mystery (5 mins)
Show "fantastic." Explain that big words aren't scary if you know how to "slice" them into chunks.
2. Direct Instruction (10 mins)
Chin Drops: Hand under chin. Each vowel sound = 1 drop = 1 syllable.
Suffix Tracking: Suffixes are "tails" that tell us when or how .
3. Guided Practice (15 mins)
Practice slicing VC/CV patterns (e.g., rab-bit, nap-kin). Students use "slicing" hand motions.
4. Independent: Case File 04 (15 mins)
Detectives divide words into syllables and circle suffix tails in their workbooks.
5. Center: Suffix Scavenger Hunt (Ongoing)
Detectives search for "tails" in provided case log sentences and record them.
Support
Focus on compound words first (sunset). Use "clapping out" to find syllables.

Lesson 5: Final Fingerprint (Review & Graduation)
Security Clearance
LEVEL: MASTER
Instructional Objective
Students will synthesize all previously learned phonics skills (CVC, blends, digraphs, silent e, vowel teams, syllables, and suffixes) to solve a cumulative final "case." Successful completion leads to graduation from the Phonics Detective Academy.

Final Fingerprint Case File
1. The Hook: The Ultimate Code (5 mins)
Inform the detectives that the Academy has received one final, scrambled transmission. This code uses every trick in the book! Only a Master Detective can solve it.
2. Guided Review: The Master Toolkit (15 mins)
Use the Final Fingerprint Slides to review each tool:
CVC Badge Sounds
Partner Patrol (Blends/Digraphs)
Magic E & Vowel Teams
Syllable Slicers & Tails
3. The Grand Escape Center (15 mins)
Detectives rotate through mini-stations to "unlock" four locks. Each lock corresponds to one of the four main skills. Once all four are unlocked, they receive their final Case File.
4. Final Independent Mission: Case File 05 (20 mins)
Detectives complete Case File 05: The Final Fingerprint . This is a multi-step investigation that requires decoding a paragraph and answering evidence-based questions.
5. Graduation Ceremony (10 mins)
Review the decoded secret message as a class. Hand out "Master Phonics Detective" badges or certificates to those who completed their Case Files.
Master Assessment
Use Case File 05 as a summative assessment. Note which "tools" (skills) each detective struggled with most. Provide extra "Rookie Training" for those specific areas in future lessons.
