The Secret Rule Silent e has a mission!
Silent 'e' Jumps Over 1 Consonant!
Silent e sends all its power jumping backward over the consonant.
The vowel stops saying its short sound /ă/ and shouts its name: /ā/!
And Magic e stays completely silent!

Lesson 1 • Introducing VCe (Long a: a_e) • 4 Students
20 Minutes Grade 1-2 Tier 2
Table Setup
Semi-circle kidney table; 4 students labeled 1 to 4 facing teacher and display.
Table Materials
4 "Magic Wand" sticks (craft stick with star/e), dry-erase markers, and student activity sheets.
Objective
Read and spell 8+ words with a_e by recognizing silent e's long vowel influence.
Timed Instructional Protocol (20 Minutes Total)
1 Phonemic Awareness Warm-Up: Sound Swap 3 Minutes
Teacher prompts oral blending without letters: "Say cap . Now change /ă/ to /ā/—what word? (cape )." Rapid-fire round table: Student 1: tap → tape • Student 2: mad → made • Student 3: rat → rate • Student 4: pan → pane.
2 Explicit Demonstration ("I Do"): The Wand Rule 5 Minutes
Project Slide 2. Write cap on table whiteboard. Read aloud. "Watch this: when Magic 'e' lands on the end, it doesn't make a peep. Instead, it leaps over the 'p' and taps 'a', ordering it to shout its name: /ā/! Now read: /k/ /ā/ /p/ → cape!"
3 Guided Practice ("We Do"): Tabletop Transformations 7 Minutes
Distribute student activity sheets. Guide students through Part 1 and Part 2 (Elkonin Sound Boxes). Ensure students say: "Three sounds: /b/ - /ā/ - /k/. The 'e' is silent, so it stays in the caboose!"
4 Paired Application ("You Do"): Sentence Reading & Check 5 Minutes
Partner 1 with 2, and Partner 3 with 4. Students whisper-read Part 3 sentences aloud to each other. Partner listens for the long /ā/ glide and verifies the correct word choice before signing off.
Immediate Error Correction
Error: Student pronounces short /ă/ on CVCe word (e.g., reads tape as tap ).
Correction Script: "Look at the end of the word. What letter is waiting there? Magic 'e'! What does Magic 'e' tell the vowel to say? (Its name!). Sound it out again."
Error: Pronouncing the 'e' (e.g., "tap-ee").
Correction Script: "Put your finger to your lips: shh! The 'e' gave away all its voice to the 'a'."
Targeted Differentiation
Support (Struggling Reader):
Use a physical highlighter tape or yellow finger pointer to trace the jump from 'e' backward over the consonant to 'a' before vocalizing.

Phonemic Focus
Distinguishing /ĭ/ vs /ī/ and /ŏ/ vs /ō/ before applying orthographic spelling.
Lesson Target
100% accuracy mapping 3-sound VCe words with silent 'e' in caboose position.
Timed Instructional Pacing (20 Minutes Total)
1 Phonemic Bridge & Minimal Pair Rapid Drill 4 Minutes
Teacher flashes minimal pair index cards. Students give a thumbs up if the vowel is long (says its name) or thumbs down if it is short.
Round 1: pin → pine • rob → robe • kit → kite • hop → hope . Rotate turns across Students 1, 2, 3, and 4 so every child articulates at least two vowel sounds independently.
2 Orthographic Code Connection ("I Do & We Do") 5 Minutes
Demonstrate with magnetic letters: r - o - b (short /ŏ/). "When silent 'e' arrives at the end, it transfers energy: /r/ - /ō/ - /b/ = robe! Now let's try k - i - t . Add 'e': /k/ - /ī/ - /t/ = kite!" Have students trace the backward leap in the air with their finger.
3 Sound Detective Mapping ("We Do Together") 6 Minutes
Guide students on Part 2 of their worksheet. Emphasize: "Even though bike has 4 letters, it has only 3 sound boxes because silent 'e' doesn't have a sound box—it sits on the caboose line!"
4 Whisper Phone Decodable Fluency ("You Do") 5 Minutes
Each student places their whisper phone to their ear and reads sentences in Part 3. The teacher leans in to listen to each student for 60 seconds, recording observations in the tracking matrix below.
