The Secret Position Rule
Detective Clue #1
Both teams make the Long A /ā/ sound. Where do they live in words?
ai Middle Maker
Appears in the MIDDLE of a base word or syllable.
English words almost never end in the letter i , so ai hides before a consonant!
r ai n → rain
ay End Champion
Appears at the END of a base word or syllable.
The letter y acts as a vowel helper at the finish line!
pl ay → play
💡 Memory Key: AI stays inside; AY waves goodbye!

Rain & Rays Teacher Guide
Standard: CCSS RF.3.3 & L.3.2
Lesson Duration: 45 Minutes
Orthographic Linguistic Background
In English orthography, base words virtually never end in the letter i (originating from scribal conventions to prevent confusion with u , v , and n ). Therefore, the long /ā/ sound at the end of a base word or accented final syllable is represented by the digraph ay (e.g., play, today, relay ), while the medial long /ā/ before a consonant is represented by ai (e.g., rain, train, paint ).
Learning Goals
• Discriminate long-A vowel teams by position rule.
• Encode 1- and 2-syllable ai and ay words.
• Decode words in connected text.
Target Sound: /ā/ (Long A)
45-Minute Instructional Pacing Guide
5 Mins
1. Auditory Hook
Say word pairs aloud (rain / ray, train / tray, pain / pay ). Ask students: "What sound is identical? Where do you hear the /ā/ sound in the first word vs the second word?" (Middle vs End). Introduce Slides 1-2.
12 Mins
2. Explicit Modeling
Present Slides 3-4. Model phoneme-grapheme mapping with sound boxes. Emphasize that ai requires a closing consonant "caboose", while ay sits in the open end seat. Choral read target words.
10 Mins
3. Guided Practice
Work through Slides 5-6 Detective Challenge. Have students use hand gestures: hands clapping inward for middle ai , hands waving outward for final ay . Read the mini-story chorally to build fluency.
12 Mins
4. Independent Work
Distribute the 2-page Activity Worksheet. Students independently complete the sorting, sound-box spelling, cloze context sentences, and creative sentences. Circulate for targeted conferring.
6 Mins
5. Check & Exit
Administer the half-page Exit Ticket as a formative check. Students complete independently without peer assistance to gauge individual mastery of the position generalization.

Common Misconceptions & How to Correct
Misconception: Spelling 'play' as *plai* or *pla*
Remedy: Remind students of the English spelling rule: English words don't like to end in the letter i ! The letter y steps in to protect the word at the finish line.
Misconception: Confusion with inflected endings (*played*, *raining*)
Remedy: Guide students to strip the suffix (-ed, -ing) to locate the base word first: "The base word is play (ends in /ā/ → ay ), then add -ed → played ."
Differentiation Strategies
Support / Tier 2:
Provide 3-color phoneme chips: blue for consonants, green for vowel teams. Have students physically tap each sound before writing the letters into Elkonin boxes.
On-Level:
Partner check during Part 2 and Part 3. Students read their completed sentences to each other aloud to confirm both fluency and spelling accuracy.
Extension / Tier 1+:
Multisyllabic challenge words: entertain, payment, maintain, display, portray . Have students divide into syllables and identify where the vowel team sits in each syllable.
