Lesson 1: Perspective Pressroom
Mission Briefing
Before students can identify complex author viewpoints, they must master the distinction between fact (verifiable information) and opinion (personal beliefs or feelings). This lesson sets the foundation by training students to spot where "viewpoint" begins.
Essential Questions
How can I tell if a statement is a fact or an opinion?
Why do authors use opinions in informational texts?
The Hook: Fact or Fiction
Hand out red/blue cards (or use thumbs up/down). Read statements rapidly. Students vote instantly.

Direct Instruction: The Evidence Test (15 min)
Use the "Truth Tracker Slides" to introduce the definitions. Focus on the "Evidence Test": Can you prove it with a photo, a ruler, or a science book?

Model finding "Signal Words" that often point to opinions. Create an anchor chart with the class.

Independent Mission: Fact Sort (20 min)
Students complete the "Fact Sort Worksheet". They categorize 10 statements from a fictional article about a Space Exploration Mission.

Provide "Opinion Starter" cards. Have students highlight only the nouns in facts to see if they are physical things.
Extension
Ask students to rewrite a "Fact" statement to include an opinion (e.g., "The sun is hot" becomes "The sun is too hot for a picnic").

Why Zoos Matter
Zoos are incredible places that help save animals from around the world. Every year, millions of people visit zoos to see animals they would never find in their own backyards. This is a wonderful way for children to learn about nature and why we need to protect it.
Many zoos also have important breeding programs. These programs help endangered animals, like the giant panda, have babies so their species doesn't disappear. Zoos are heroes for animals!
Without zoos, many people would never care about the planet. They are the best way to keep the magic of wildlife alive for everyone.

Imagine living your whole life in a small room. This is the sad reality for animals kept in zoos. While zoos claim to help animals, they are actually trapping them in tiny spaces that look nothing like their real homes in the wild.
Wild animals like elephants and tigers are meant to roam for miles. In a zoo, they are often bored and lonely. No matter how many people visit, a cage is still a cage. It is wrong to keep animals for our own entertainment.
We should protect animals in the wild instead of locking them up. Animals deserve to be free and happy in their natural habitats.

Skill Area Level 3: Expert Level 2: Reporter Level 1: Rookie Point of View Clarity POV is unmistakable. Uses strong first-person language throughout. POV is clear, but first-person language is only used once or twice. POV is hard to find or inconsistent. Evidence & Reasons Provides 2+ strong, logical reasons. Each reason has supporting facts. Provides at least 1-2 reasons, but facts may be missing or weak. States an opinion but gives no reasons to support it. Loaded Language Expertly uses persuasive words to influence the reader's feelings. Uses some descriptive words, but they aren't very persuasive. Language is neutral and lacks "opinion power." The Counter-Point Clearly acknowledges the other side and explains why they disagree. Mentions that others might disagree but doesn't explain why. Ignores other viewpoints entirely.
