Whispers on The Rock
The True History and Spooky Mysteries of Alcatraz
An Island in the Chilly Fog
In the middle of San Francisco Bay sits a lonely chunk of land called Alcatraz Island. Most people simply call it "The Rock." Long ago, sea birds were the only creatures living there. Later, the United States built a military fort and the very first lighthouse on the West Coast to guide ships through the thick, swirling fog.
The Toughest Prison on Earth
In 1934, the island became a high-security federal prison. It held some of the country's most dangerous criminals. Escaping was nearly impossible. Even if a prisoner managed to sneak past guard towers and thick iron bars, they faced freezing ocean currents and hungry sharks. For twenty-nine years, nobody ever proved they successfully escaped.
Ghostly Sounds and Banjo Strums
The prison closed in 1963 and became a national park. Soon, mysterious rumors started spreading. Park rangers and brave night visitors reported strange happenings. The most famous story tells of faint banjo music echoing from the empty shower room! Years ago, a notorious prisoner named Al Capone received permission to practice his banjo in that exact room. Could his spirit still be playing tunes?
Cold Cells or Natural Tricks?
Other visitors describe sudden icy gusts inside Cell 14D, an old solitary cell where prisoners sat in total darkness. People also report hearing heavy metal doors clanging shut when no one is near. Are ghosts haunting the cellblocks? Scientists point out that ocean winds easily whistle through cracks in the aged concrete, and thick stone naturally holds pockets of cold air. Whether you believe in ghosts or chilly science, "The Rock" remains one of America's greatest mysteries!
