UFLI Daily Checks & Friday Testing Guide
Protocols & Scoring
Daily End-of-Day Quick Checks (Days 1–4)
Takes 3–5 minutes at the end of each daily lesson
Day 1 Check Slate Flip
Sound Slate Show: Teacher gives sound. Students write grapheme and read 1 word aloud. 100% slate flip for rapid visual verification.
Day 2 Check Chaining
2-Word Swap: Students adjust 1 letter (e.g., stop → step) and tap-read both words to confirm phoneme discrimination.
Day 3 Check Whisper
Sentence Read: Students read assigned decodable sentence into a whisper phone or to a partner with correct phrasing and inflection.
Day 4 Check COPS Audit
Dictation Self-Audit: Quick student check using COPS (Capitals, Order, Punctuation, Spelling of target pattern & Heart Words).
High-Leverage Teacher Scripts & Routines
1. Error Correction: My Turn, Our Turn, Your Turn
When a student misreads or mispronounces a sound/word:
Teacher: "My turn: that sound is /sh/. What sound?"
Class/Student: "/sh/."
Teacher: "Our turn together: /sh/. Your turn alone?"
Student: "/sh/." (Immediately re-blend word from start.)
2. Orthographic Mapping: Heart Word Routine
Explicitly teaching irregular high-frequency words:
1. Say the word: "The word is said. Say it."
2. Tap the sounds: "/s/ - /e/ - /d/ → 3 sounds."
3. Map graphemes: "s writes /s/, d writes /d/. The middle /e/ is spelled ai—that's the heart part to learn by heart!"
3. Sentence Dictation: 4-Step Student Protocol
Prevents cognitive overload during sentence writing:
1. Listen: Teacher speaks sentence twice; pencils down.
2. Echo & Count: Students repeat and tap words on fingers.
3. Write: Students write word-by-word with finger spaces.
4. Pencil Check: Touch each word and whisper-read to verify.
4. Articulation & Mouth Shape Script (Sound Wall)
Connecting articulatory gestures to phoneme awareness:
Voice: "Is your voicebox vibrating? Touch your throat."
Mouth: "Look in mirror. Are lips round or smile? Where is tongue?"
Airflow: "Continuous airflow (f, s, m) or stopped (p, t, k)?"
Friday Mastery Assessment & Decision Matrix
Weekly Action Plan
| Proficiency Band | Friday Test Score | Observed Student Behaviors | Instructional Action for Next Week |
|---|
| Mastery | 80% – 100% | Encodes 4–5 target words correctly; fluent reading with <2 errors. | Advance to next UFLI lesson. Provide vocabulary/writing extensions. |
| Approaching | 60% – 79% | Hesitant blending; omits vowels or confuses voiced/unvoiced cognates. | Schedule 10-min Tier 2 small group: extra tile chaining & decodable reread. |
| Intensive Need | < 60% | Cannot map phoneme to grapheme; frequent whole-word guessing. | Pause progression. Reteach using multisensory tracing & sound wall drill. |
