The Syllable Division Code
To read big words, we must divide them into readable chunks (syllables). In Step 5.4, we focus on closed multi-syllabic words with VCCV and VCCCV spelling patterns.
Rule 1: VCCV Split
Split between the consonants.

Rule 2: VCCCV Split
Keep blends & digraphs together!

The Scooping Rule
Place your pencil or finger under the first vowel. Scoop cleanly to the end of the first syllable. Pause, then scoop the second!

Closed Syllables
A closed syllable has exactly one vowel followed by one or more consonants. The vowel sound is short!

The 3-Consonant Rule
In VCCCV patterns, check the middle 3 consonants. Blends like str, spl, ct, gr must stick together!
