1
Max and his golden dog, Rusty, loved exploring the woods behind their house. A summer thunderstorm had washed through the shallow creek yesterday. Today, the water was low and clear, leaving fresh gravel bars along the muddy banks.
2
Max stepped into the cool water wearing his tall rubber boots. He carried a small garden shovel and a plastic bucket. Rusty splashed ahead, sniffing under mossy roots. Max walked slowly, keeping his eyes glued to the shiny rocks on the bottom.
3
Suddenly, a pointed black stone trapped between two wet pebbles caught his eye. Max reached down and scooped it into his hands. It was not an ordinary rock! It was shaped like a sharp triangle with tiny jagged edges along both sides.
4
"Look, Rusty! A real shark tooth fossil!" Max cheered with a huge grin. Long ago, this whole forest was covered by a deep, ancient ocean. Max placed his prehistoric treasure inside his bucket, excited to bring it to school for show-and-tell.
