Volcano Quest Assessment
A Trip to Remember
Read the text. Then answer the questions.
“But it’s a volcano,” said Marta’s mom.
“It’s a dormant volcano,” said Marta. “It hasn’t erupted in a hundred years.”
Marta sat beside her family. They were selecting a place for their next camping trip. Marta was trying to get them to go to Lassen Volcanic National Park. She wanted to see the volcano there.
“But I want to go swimming,” said Marta’s older brother.
“And I want to go fishing!” added Marta’s dad.
Marta’s mom sighed. “I just want to look at the stars at night.”
“We can do all those things!” said Marta. “And we can also go hiking. We can explore steam vents. We can see boiling springs. We can even find bubbling mud pots. A park ranger can show us all these places. He can teach us about the volcano there.”
“Bubbling mud pots?” asked Marta’s younger brother. The words made him giggle.
“That does sound kind of cool,” said her older brother. Then he shrugged. “I don’t mind, as long as there’s a lake.”
Marta smiled and squealed loudly.
“There is something for everyone!” she said quickly.
Her mom and dad looked at each other.
Marta was a statue.
“Okay,” her dad said. “It’s not that far of a drive. Problem solved.”
This time, Marta did squeal. She couldn’t believe it. She was going to see a volcano!
