The Stone on the Slope
180 Decodable Words
1 Cole and Rose rode bikes to the big slope. The slope was close to home. Cole had a fine stone in his tote bag. It was his prize stone from the lake. Cole kept it safe in his tote.
2 Cole sat on a log to tell a joke. Rose smiled and spoke, "That joke is grand!" But then Cole got up. His tote fell off the log. The stone fell into a hole by a pine pole!
3 Cole ran to the hole. "I hope I can get it back," Cole spoke. Cole got a stick to poke inside the hole. But the stick broke with a snap! "Do not choke on the dust," said Rose. Cole felt sad. "I hope my stone is not lost," Cole said.
4 Just then, a little mole poked its pink nose up from the hole! Cole and Rose froze. They sat still on the path. The mole pushed the stone close to Cole!
5 Cole spoke in a soft tone. "Thank you, little mole!" The stone had a shine like a glass globe. Cole put the stone safe in his tote. Then Cole and Rose rode back home. Cole was glad he did not lose hope!
