Long ago, brave generals led Rome. Julius Caesar was a famous Roman leader. He was proud of his family and felt confident about his future.
One day, fierce pirates captured young Caesar at sea. The pirates demanded twenty coins of silver for his freedom. Caesar laughed loudly at their demand! He felt insulted by the low price. He insisted that he was worth fifty coins instead. While he stayed on the pirate ship, Caesar wrote poems. The pirates seemed bored and did not care about his poems. Caesar grew upset and scolded them. Soon, his Roman friends paid the money. Caesar became free, but he remembered their rude behavior. He sailed back with soldiers, chased the pirates, and captured them all.
Caesar was a skilled fighter and a gifted writer. Later, he traveled to Asia and stopped an enemy revolt. Caesar sent a very short report back to Rome. It said, “Veni, vidi, vici.” In English, these Latin words mean, “I came, I saw, I conquered.”
Next, Caesar marched into Gaul. The distant land seemed dangerous and wild. Caesar fought hard and conquered the people. Afterward, he wrote an exciting book about his battles. His words remain clear and easy to understand. Today, students still read his stories.
