The Indefinite Pronoun Trap
Why your ear lies to you on the SAT—and how to catch singular subjects hiding behind deceptive plural nouns.
TEACHER NOTE
Hook students immediately: tell them the SAT counts on their "ear" to fail them. When a plural noun sits right before a verb, natural intuition picks a plural verb. Today we break that illusion.
Step 1 • The Golden Rule
Meet the "Singular Five"
0:35 – 1:15
Rule: These five pronouns are ALWAYS grammatically singular.
No matter how many people or items are involved, they require a SINGULAR verb (is, has, was, -s).
Everyone "Every single one" → has / is
Each Individual item → has / is
Nobody Not one person → knows / was
Someone A single person → is / has
Neither Neither one → is / was
TEACHER NOTE
Remind students: Replace any of these words with "He" or "It" in their head. You say "He is," not "He are."
Step 2 • The SAT Trap Formula
The "Interrupter" Illusion
1:15 – 2:05
How the SAT writes the trap:
True Subject Singular Pronoun (Each, Neither, Someone...)
THE DECOY!
Prepositional Phrase Plural Noun! (of the doctors, in the dorms...)
Required Verb Singular Verb (ignores the decoy plural)
Strategy: Slash through the prepositional interrupter
Neither [of the candidates] is qualified.
← "Neither is qualified"
Each [of the violins] was restored.
← "Each was restored"
TEACHER NOTE
Physically tell students: "Put pencil brackets around 'of the [plural]' and cross it out!" The verb connects straight to the front word.
Step 3 • Practice Sprint
Cross Out the Decoy • Pick the Verb
2:05 – 2:40
1
Someone [from the engineering teams] has have arrived.
Ignore plural decoy: teams → Subject is Someone
SINGULAR
2
Nobody [among the senior researchers] understands understand the data.
Ignore plural decoy: researchers → Subject is Nobody
SINGULAR
3
Everyone [on the advisory councils] agrees agree with the vote.
Ignore plural decoy: councils → Subject is Everyone
SINGULAR
TEACHER NOTE
Have the room chant the subject and verb aloud together: "Someone has! Nobody understands! Everyone agrees!"
Wrap-Up • Test Day Habit
The 3-Second Mental Checklist
2:40 – 3:00
1
Spot the Trigger
See Everyone, Each, Nobody, Someone, Neither at the start of a clause? Alarm bells ring!
Trigger = Guaranteed Singular
2
Slash the Fluff
Put mental brackets around prepositional phrases: [of the...] or [in the...].
The noun inside CANNOT be subject
3
Test with "He / It"
Substitute the pronoun with "He" or "It". Match to the singular verb form.
It is • He has • She knows
Rule locked in: Never let an intervening plural noun pick your verb!
