GENRE ESSENTIALS Slide 2 of 6
Grade 8 English Language Arts
What is Realistic Fiction?
An invented story that could truly happen in today's real world!
Relatable People
Characters are everyday kids and adults with real flaws, mixed feelings, quirks, and honest choices—no superpowers.
Focus: Deep empathy
Familiar Settings
Set in recognizable middle schools, neighborhoods, apartments, or real cities governed by natural physical laws.
Focus: True-to-life spaces
Real-Life Drama
Conflicts mirror teenage reality: family hurdles, rumors, friendship tests, identity, and standing up for what's right.
Focus: Believable consequences
Realistic fiction holds up a mirror to real human experiences!
PLAUDIBLE & HONEST
THE STORY LENS Slide 3 of 6
Who is telling the story?
Narrative Point of View: The Camera Angle
POV decides what readers know, what stays secret, and who we feel for!
1ST PERSON I • Me • We • My
Inside Their Head
The narrator is a character inside the story. We hear their private thoughts and doubts, but we only know what they see!
"I stared at the audition sign-up sheet, my palms sweating so much the pen almost slipped."
3RD PERSON He • She • They
Outside Looking In
An outside narrator tells the story. The author chooses whether this narrator peeks inside one character or sees everyone.
"Devon took a steady breath, pretending not to hear the whispers echoing down the locker row."
Pro Clue: Look at the pronouns outside of quotation marks to find the POV!

Narrative Types
Third-Person Showdown: Limited vs. Omniscient
How much mind-reading power does the narrator have?
3rd Person Limited
ONE MIND
The narrator zooms in on one central character. We feel what they feel, while everyone else remains a mystery.
Sample: "Sam smiled, but his stomach flipped. He wondered if Chloe was secretly disappointed in him."
Superpower: Builds intense suspense and intimacy!
3rd Person Omniscient
ALL-KNOWING
An all-seeing narrator knows the secrets, thoughts, and pasts of multiple characters all at once.
Sample: "Sam worried Chloe was upset, unaware that Chloe was simply stressing over her science test."
Superpower: Shows dramatic irony and both sides of a fight!
Third-Person Objective: Acts like a quiet security camera—reports actions & dialogue with zero inner thoughts.

The Lens Shift: Rewrite the Cafeteria Scene
Change the narrator, change the whole story!

A metal tray crashes to the floor during lunch. Fifty students turn and stare. Jordan stands in the middle of the aisle, frozen, sauce splattered across their brand-new shoes.
A Task A: Jordan’s 1st Person Lens
Write 2 sentences from Jordan's perspective ("I", "my"). Reveal Jordan’s secret internal conflict and how it feels to freeze under the spotlight.
B Task B: 3rd Person Omniscient Lens
Write 2 sentences revealing what Jordan feels AND what another student laughing at the table is secretly thinking inside their own head.
