Welded Sounds (-ng / -nk)
Phonics Objective
This assessment measures a student's ability to segment and encode words with welded (glued) sounds. Specifically, the -ng (-ing, -ang, -ung) and -nk (-ink, -ank, -unk) sound families. Students write words as single units on the handwriting guidelines.
Dictation Script (Optional)
To administer orally, read each number, say the word, read the sentence, and ask students to write.
1. bunk: "My brother sleeps on the top bunk. Spell bunk."
2. lung: "Take a deep breath and fill your left lung. Spell lung."
3. swing: "We loved playing high on the playground swing. Spell swing."
4. bank: "She went to put her savings in the piggy bank. Spell bank."
5. blink: "The bright headlights made her blink fast. Spell blink."
6. sang: "The happy children sang a sweet song. Spell sang."
