Inside, he believed, rested the lost celestial map , an artifact of unimaginable value that could guide lost travelers through any storm and prove her family's historical mastery of timekeeping. To protect his legacy and save the workshop, Lyra knew she had to find that map tonight.
Slipping through the town gates, Lyra and Pip ventured deep into the shadowy paths of the Whispering Woods . The forest was named for its massive ironwood trees, whose silver-tipped leaves murmured secrets whenever the wind blew. Using her grandfather’s ancient brass astrolabe , Lyra measured the angle of the North Star against the mountain peaks. She carefully translated the ancient runes carved into the bark of the ironwood trees, matching them to the star charts in her journal.
As the midnight moon reached its peak, Pip squeaked excitedly, scratching at a hidden stone trapdoor concealed beneath thick moss. Brushing the moss away, Lyra revealed a spectacular bronze dial carved with the constellation of Orion.
