A five-day explicit phonics warm-up unit for third-grade intervention focusing on advanced and ambiguous vowel teams. Built on an explicit I Do, We Do, You Do gradual release framework featuring phoneme-grapheme mapping, touch-and-read routines, real word decoding, and nonsense word orthographic testing.

Daily Lesson Plans: Focus, Articulation & Word Banks
DAY 1 Long & Short E Teams (ea, ee, ey)
Sound: /ē/ & /ĕ/
Articulatory & Rule Cue
Lips stretch wide like a giant smile for /ē/. Warn students: ea is unpredictable! Test long /ē/ first (feast). If that doesn't make sense, try short /ĕ/ (tread, thread).
Teacher Modeling Words
I Do: feast (/f/-/ē/-/s/-/t/ = 4 sounds) We Do: glead (/g/-/l/-/ē/-/d/ = 4 sounds, Nonsense!)
Mouth forms an open 'O' ring. Teach position rules: oa almost always sits in the middle between consonants (boat, groan). ow and oe sit at word ends (glow, toe).
Teacher Modeling Words
I Do: groan (/g/-/r/-/ō/-/n/ = 4 sounds) We Do: swoe (/s/-/w/-/ō/ = 3 sounds, Nonsense!)
Diphthongs glide! Have students touch chin: chin drops and lips slide forward. Generalization: oi and ou are internal; oy and ow are final. Note: ow can say /ō/ or /ow/!
Teacher Modeling Words
I Do: spoil (/s/-/p/-/oi/-/l/ = 4 sounds) We Do: scrowl (/s/-/k/-/r/-/ow/-/l/ = 5 sounds, Nonsense!)
Partner A reads, Partner B tracks: Partner B holds pencil as a pointer. If Partner A pauses longer than 3 seconds or guesses, Partner B taps the desk twice and says, "Touch the dots!" After 1 minute, switch roles. This prevents passive waiting and doubles active reading repetitions.

DAY 4 Stealthy Teams (ai, ay, eigh, igh)
Sounds: /ā/ & /ī/
Articulatory & Rule Cue
Introduce the "Silent Bodyguards" concept: gh is completely silent. In eigh (4 letters = 1 sound: /ā/) and igh (3 letters = 1 sound: /ī/). Emphasize: Do not pronounce /g/ or /h/!
Teacher Modeling Words
I Do: sleigh (/s/-/l/-/ā/ = 3 sounds!) We Do: blight (/b/-/l/-/ī/-/t/ = 4 sounds, Nonsense/Rare)
Distinguish between long /ū/ (lips pushed out like chewing bubblegum: flew, shrewd) and short book-oo /ŏŏ/ (brook). For au/aw, jaw drops down wide in awe: /aw/ (launch, sprawl).
Teacher Modeling Words
I Do: shrewd (/sh/-/r/-/ū/-/d/ = 4 sounds) We Do: craut (/k/-/r/-/aw/-/t/ = 4 sounds, Nonsense!)
For students who drop phonemes in blends (e.g., reading spoil as soil), provide physical colored bingo chips. Push one chip for each consonant and a large double-chip for the vowel team before touching printed letters.
Tier 3 Support: Hand Mirror & Continuous Blending
For students struggling with choppy decoding (/b/ ... /r/ ... /ā/ ... /d/ → ???), eliminate the pause: sing each sound continuously without stopping airflow between letters ("bbbrrraaaid"). Use hand mirrors to verify mouth shapes.
End-of-Week Mastery Benchmark Target: 90%+ on real words AND 80%+ on nonsense words. Nonsense accuracy confirms genuine decoding skill.

Diagnostic Error Analysis Matrix: Common 3rd Grade Misconceptions
1. Vowel Team Splitting (Sounding out each vowel letter) e.g., Reading /b/-/o/-/a/-/t/ instead of /b/-/ō/-/t/
Diagnosis: Weak orthographic mapping of digraph graphemes. Prescription: Physically highlight the vowel team in yellow marker before reading. Teach the chant: "Two letters, one mouth shape!" Have student tap the team with two fingers held together.
2. Consonant Blend Chopping (Dropping internal consonants) e.g., Reading "spoil" as "soil" or "sprawl" as "spall"
Diagnosis: Phonological working memory overload during multi-phoneme blending. Prescription: Isolate the initial blend first (/s/-/p/ → /sp/). Then blend the vowel team (/sp/-/oi/ → /spoi/). Finally attach the coda (/spoi/-/l/ → /spoil/).
3. Sight-Guessing on Nonsense Words e.g., Reading "froan" as "front" or "shroap" as "shop"
Diagnosis: Over-reliance on contextual/visual guessing cues rather than phonemic decoding. Prescription: Cover all letters with an index card and reveal left-to-right one sound unit at a time. Remind: "This is a silly alien word! Your brain cannot guess it; you must trust the sounds!"
HD Word Re-Teaching Decision Rule: If student scores <4/6 on any single day's nonsense words, conduct a 3-minute 1-on-1 tactile mapping review using letter tiles before moving to the next day's team.
