Part I: Climate Context & Reading Comprehension (Questions 1–4)

Score 1–4: ____ / 4

Climate and Vegetation

35 Latin America has a variety of climates and different types of vegetation. Traveling through the region, you can journey through deserts and rainforests and from grassy plains to empty plateaus. Most of Latin America lies in the tropics and has some form of tropical climate. Elevation, however, affects climates throughout the region. Land at low elevations is hot and humid with green tropical vegetation. Crops such as sugarcane, bananas, and cacao beans grow well here. At higher elevations, you will notice that the climate becomes milder and temperatures cooler. Crops such as coffee, corn, and wheat grow in this area. In the highest areas, you will see very little plant life and may even spot frost and snow.

45 Rain forests cover the lowland areas of Latin America. They are rainy and hot all the time. Rain forests have more kinds of plants and animals than anywhere else on earth. The world’s largest tropical rainforest is in Brazil in the Amazon basin. Other rainforests grow along the eastern coast of Central America and in some of the Caribbean islands.

CThe Amazon River basin serves as the sole source of freshwater and agricultural production across South America.

QUESTION 3 • Inferences & Evidence Lines 35–44

Based on "Climate and Vegetation," what can the reader conclude about the relationship between altitude and agriculture?

ATropical cash crops like sugarcane thrive in the highest mountain zones because of frequent frost.

BAgricultural crops are distributed according to temperature zones created by varying elevations.

CStaple grains like corn and wheat require constant humid conditions found solely at sea level.

DElevation has minimal impact on farming because the entire region is located inside the tropics.

QUESTION 4 • Text Structure Lines 8–34

How does the author primarily organize the information in the section titled "The Land"?

ABy presenting a chronological timeline tracing volcanic eruptions from prehistory to the present.

BBy categorizing physical landforms into distinct groups with regional geographic examples.
